Last Bites
The Last bites are a form of Crabgi that forms with symbiotic algae growth upon its back. Its insides are more meat-like and they travel the ground in the shallows of the islands and upper coasts of mainland Levis. As a merging between fungi and algae, the sentient creatures are all 'plant' to the peoples of the Oceanus region.
Their main draw is their hardy lifestyle, capable of living in both salt and fresh water. In varying populations in all regions except the Mangrove forests, the crabgi in question like to frequent rocky habitats. They grow up to 3cm in diameter and resemble most a fiddler crab, with that square upturned body and small frontal saws. They have tiny mandibles and their diet is a mix of photosynthesis and a consumption of worms and molluscs.
They get their colloquial name for their main use - as travel food for some of the more omnivorous of the inhabitants of the ocean waves. Troll ships (and more recently demon ships) tend to hook up some baskets to their ships in longer journeys, filling them with the small crabgi, letting them grow and overfill with the algae. Consuming the algae gives off a popping sensation in the mouth as the highly acidic, slightly sweet and mildly toxic flavour profile hits the taste buds. The Last bites part comes in when all other food is consumed and sailors are forced to consume the crabgi itself, which means the algae cannot be further harvested either.
