Dirth
There is no more madness that to eat your Dirth. You'd rather trade away all your belongings for food.
Septum can be used in many things, but the easiest way to trade it for use is the Dirth.
The dirth is a lattice made from woven and pressed solid caramel, with Septum poured between the lattices and wafers of caramel pressed and sealed on either side. The Dirth is kept at a standard size, thus allowing it to become a high market trade standard to be measured against.
While not all septum is converted to dirth within Whencis, a fair deal is traded this way, mostly for large quantities of lower end goods, that can be distributed among the populace. Traders outside the core population of Whencis often use Dirth as a trade chit, for the ease of transportation and the way they can get what they need without pesky IOU. A smart trader with nothing to trade but the Dirth will find the nearest route to a Pastry Mages, where a guaranteed trade will almost always be made.
Given the difference in density, viscosity and melting points, the Dirth is separated by melting the top layer of the Dirth on an angle to drain off the wafer of caramel, before light heat is used to coax the Septum out and into a storage vessel. The remaining caramel is then melted down for further use.
