Shugenja
A Shugenja in the world of Rokugan is a highly esteemed and spiritually gifted individual who serves as a conduit between mortals and the Kami , the elemental spirits that embody the natural world. They are of the Samurai caste, and act as priests within the world. They generally wear sanctified robes. They will wear their wakazashi as a symbol of status, but most do not carry a katana with them about their daily life, signifying that they will not defend themselves with steel. In its place, many carry scroll cases. These cases are filled with sacred scrolls that can be used to invoke the kami. A skilled shugenja can still entreat the Kami without a scroll, but it is generally easier to invoke them with a sacred scroll.
Shugenja are considered rare and sanctified by Tengoku. As such, unlike other samurai, they are allowed to openly surrender in a battle, and can generally accept the surrender to be accepted. The duty shugenja have to the world is so great that it can be considered a waste to put one to death. As most shugenja are honourable samurai, this surrender is generally not a trick, and the shugenja will uphold the terms of the surrender.
