Samurai

The samurai class in Rokugan is the ruling elite, encompassing both the Buge, the unlanded samuria, and the Kuge, the land owning samuria.. This social class holds significant influence over the political, military, and cultural aspects of Rokugan.

Social Status and Hierarchy


Elite Ruling Class: The samurai class is at the top of the social hierarchy, wielding power and authority over all other classes in Rokugan.
Hereditary Class: Membership is generally hereditary, passed down through noble families, though exceptional individuals can be elevated to samurai status.  The most common elevation is for peasant shugenja.  If a low born individual is able to speak to the kami, it is generally considered that they should be treated as a member of the samurai class.  Additionally, exemplary service, especially in a martial capacity, cna lead to promotion.

Roles and Responsibilities


Governance: Samurai administer lands, manage resources, collect taxes, and enforce laws. They hold various governmental positions.
Military Leadership: Samurai are the military leaders and warriors of Rokugan, responsible for defending the empire, leading troops, and maintaining peace and order.
Cultural Custodians: They are patrons of the arts, literature, and cultural traditions, contributing to the preservation and promotion of Rokugan’s heritage.

Code of Bushido


Ethical Code: Central to the samurai class is Bushido, the code of conduct that emphasizes honor, duty, loyalty, courage, and righteousness.
Moral Exemplars: Samurai are expected to be paragons of virtue, embodying the ideals of Bushido in their actions and decisions.

Privileges and Entitlements


Land and Wealth: Samurai often hold land or receive stipends from their lords, providing them with the means to fulfill their duties and maintain their status.
Legal and Social Privileges: They enjoy various privileges, such as the right to bear arms, wear the two swords (daisho), and partake in the governing process.
Cultural Influence: Samurai shape societal norms and cultural practices through their patronage and participation in the arts and intellectual life.

Role in Society

 
Protectors and Leaders: Samurai are the protectors of Rokugan, responsible for the safety, order, and prosperity of the empire.
Role Models: They are expected to be role models, demonstrating the virtues of Bushido and setting standards for behavior and conduct.
Clan Loyalty: Samurai identities are closely tied to their clan affiliations, and their actions reflect upon their family and clan, influencing their collective honor and status.
