Shinobi

Shinobi are covert operatives and spies skilled in espionage, infiltration, sabotage, and assassination.  No clan officially admits to mantaining Samurai of this dishonourable rank.  It is an open secret that the Scorpion Clan uses these operatives.  However, extremely noble clans utilize Shinobi as well, including the Crane Clan Diadoji Harriers, or the Lion Clan Ikoma Shadows.  Even discussing Shinobi is somewhat taboo and dishonourable, and is generally only done in the context of trying to stop them, or in art, such as stories and plays.

Due to the extremely distasteful nature of their true duty, shinobi tend to have a cover profession over their true work.  This varies from shinobi to shinobi.  Shosuro Infiltrators often act as yojimbo to Bayushi Courtiers.  The Cat Clan samurai pretend to be travelling entertainers.  Some would consider the Hiruma Scouts to be shinobi, but because they are sneaking through the Shadowlands, amongst tainted monsters of terrible power, they are likely the most honourable shinobi in the empire.  This is to say any profession suitable for a samurai can be used by a shinobi.  Dedicated shinobi may even disguise themselves as Heimin or Eta .

Despite this, they maintain a sense of loyalty to their clan and lord, viewing their actions as necessary sacrifices for the greater good.
Role in Conflict: Shinobi play a vital role in Rokugan's conflicts, providing essential intelligence and executing covert operations that influence the outcomes of battles and political negotiations. Their actions can sway the balance of power between clans and shape the course of Rokugan's history.

Challenges and Rewards

Secrecy and Risk: Shinobi operate in constant danger, facing the risk of capture, torture, or death if their identities are exposed. They must maintain absolute secrecy about their missions and identities, even from other members of their clan, to protect themselves and their operations.
Recognition and Loyalty: Successful Shinobi earn recognition and respect within their clan's leadership for their contributions to security and intelligence gathering. They operate in the shadows, often without public acknowledgment, relying on the trust and loyalty of their superiors and fellow operatives.
