Redemption Item in Legacy of the Realms | World Anvil

Redemption

+1 Weapon (greatsword), rare (requires attunement)     When the wielder reduces an evil-aligned target to 0 hit points with this magical weapon, he or she can have that creature instantly evaporate in a radiant burst. All other evil-aligned beings within 30 feet of that creature take 2d8 radiant damage and must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or be blinded until the end of their next turn.   Once use this feature is used, it can't be used again until the wielder finishes a long rest. While wielding this magical weapon, having 0 hit points doesn't knock the wielder unconscious. He or she still must make death saving throws, and still suffers the normal effects of taking damage while at 0 hit points. However, if the wielder would die due to failing death saving throws, he or she doesn't die until the end of his or her next turn and will die then only if he or she still has 0 hit points.

History

In 1440 DR, years before the Companion appeared in the sky, a young red dragon made life miserable for the residents of Elturel. It ate livestock, burned crops, and demanded tribute. Then one day, a scruffy-looking, unarmored woman wielding a greatsword marched up to the dragon and hacked at the beast with mighty swings.   Before the stunned creature could fly away, she slew it. A startled and overwhelmed populace rushed toward the woman to thank and reward her for her bravery. As they approached, however, she fell dead. The unknown woman was laid to rest in this special place in the cathedral, and her body has never decomposed. Her nonmagical greatsword, which was named Redemption, was placed at her side. Rumors suggest that she was an incarnation of Torm, or that Torm's essence filled the woman and inspired her to defeat the threat.

Significance

Redemption may have been forged by the human Cormyrean smith, Brom Ironhand, who was considered one of the finest Cormyrean swordsmiths in the early 1300s. It was believed to have been forged as a gift to Azoun IV on the day of his birth. However, the sword may have either been stolen or lost before Azoun IV became old enough to use it. Where it has been and how it came to be in the hands of a commoner woman who slew a young red dragon in Elturel in 1440 remains a mystery lost in history.
The greatsword, Redemption. Wielder unknown.
This legendary blade was found in the catacombs of High Hall in Elturel while it was in Avernus, the first layer of the Nine Hells.
