Claudin Alkyonides-Ysern

Vice-Scholarch Claudin Alkyonides-Ysern

Human, born 1300AK to the ancient client-house of Alkyonides-Ysern . Studied under private tutors and then at Kalamak from 1317AK to 1321AK (Adept thesis: “The Noetic Principle in Inanimate Conjurations”). Served in the First Cohort Arcane from 1321AK to 1326 AK, then as court magician to Duchess Severina Ysern van Ysberwaal from 1326 AK to 1330 AK. On the Duchess’ recommendation, was appointed Vice-Scholarch Umbral 1330 AK, a position he held until his death in 1344 AK under suspicious circumstances. His research interests included telesmic warding, and the classification of dream realms.
Claudin Alkyonides-Ysern was a magician and academic, who held the position of Vice-Scholarch of the Faculty Umbral at the Academy of Gildenschloss.   Those who knew him were often of the opinion that he was rather better at manipulating the internal politics of the Academy than he was as a scholar; whilst technically proficient in spellcraft, his writings were for the most part dry and uninspired. He had a tendency to take credit for the achievements of others, even going as far as to sometimes pass off the work of his students as his own - and it was this that ultimately led to his downfall. In the Sixth Moon of 1344 he informed the Scholarch of the Academy, Gudrun Athelswicht-Zaal, of several of his groundbreaking findings in the area of dreamsculpting - all of which had been developed by his student Motion Ashbrook-Sarren. When Motion discovered this, the pair of them had argued, and Motion had threatened to report his blatant plagiarism to the Scholarch and to the Mistress of the Tower if she had to. In order to attempt to eliminate this threat to his career, Claudin attempted to enter Motion's dreams that night in order to access her unconscious mind and erase her memory of the entire affair - but in doing so, encountered the Hound of Ill Omen that was bound there.   Though the precise sequence of events that followed is unclear, it appears that a combination of Claudin's unexpected psychic intrusion and the state of mind of Motion - who had been drinking heavily, despairing that anyone would believe her if she did report Claudin's plagarism, and may have blacked-out under the influence of alcohol - led to the Hound physically manifesting and then breaking free of the control of Sanctity Falcoferri-Riddacci. Claudin was able to escape it and fled to his office, which he proceeded to ward against intruding spirits; during the time that it was free, the Hound was able to reach Avenfort and kill both Guillaume Arthmael-Riddacci and his co-conspirator Tybald Carver before Sanctity was able to reassert control over it, and use the Hound to kill Claudin in order to keep its existence secret.
