Scope
The motivation behind building Legacy of Daedalus
This is the vision of a hard science fiction universe that can serve as the inspiration for a series of novels.
The goal of the project
Even if I never complete the novels I have planned, I can at least say I got this far and did this much.
Legacy of Daedalus's Unique Selling point
I want to create a series of compelling, worthwhile novels.
Theme
Genre
Hard science fiction.
Reader Experience
This setting should feel like a grounded and realistic continuation of human history several centuries into the future.
Reader Tone
I'm trying for a realistic future, in which people are trying to learn from the mistakes of the past and build a better tomorrow, but are held back by political disagreements.
Recurring Themes
Exploration, expansion, trying to create a new future and a better society, dealing with tragedy, setbacks and the malicious behavior of self-interested parties.
Character Agency
Character agency entirely depends on how much power that character has. The poor struggle to survive and the ultra-elite make changes that will affect worlds for centuries to come.
Focus
Building characters that have their own voice and motivations and cooperate with and clash with others in a realistic manner.
Weaving a narrative of historical progress and setbacks, of aspirations obtained and lost.
Changing technology and how societies change in each new era.
Drama
The nations of Earth must survive in an era of climate change, overpopulation and resultant political instability. After a freak solar storm of immense magnitude, survivors must maintain civilization in a post-apocalyptic world.
Inhabitants of a nascent Lunar colony exist in a virtual utopia, but race against the clock to expand their world before the opportunity is lost forever. After The Collapse, they must make brutal sacrifices to keep their utopian society healthy.
