S41. Ice Cold Pipcycle Report
General Summary
Regrouped at the Gatehouse, the adventurers tried to come up with a new plan while Sila keeps an eye on the dragon as best as she can. Wolfaen finds a page from a notebook or journal of some kind. It's very old. It says something like:
I've built this Hold on Icespire Peak as our perch from which we swoop down on the aggressive Orc hords to thin their numbers and protect the settlers populating the valley below. My warriors and I strike from above like lightning so I have made our crest a Tower wrapped in golden lightning bolts.They note that the description does not match the lightning bolts of Talos' symbol. "Now's not really the time for a history lesson," Helaena gripes. They plan to send the rat across to scout ahead, but he finds that there is no real room under the door for him to squeeze through. Sila checks it out, and confirms that there is no room for the rat. So they take the plunge and run across one at a time, trying to avoid dragons and such. Amarille makes it across first, and she makes it through to the door at the other end. Keth is right behind her. Then Amarille opens the door and finds some animated skeletons rising from the ground (the source of the ckickety-clacking she heard before). These skeletons wear long-ruined armor bearing the symbol of the Icespire Hold (tower with lightning), but also bear a branding on their foreheads that look like a triange with a skull in it. They have a bone to pick with anyone who comes into the room…and Amarille and Keth get to work on them while the others make it across the bridge. Helaena makes it into the fray and the 3 finish them off before Flicker and Wolf make it over there. They begin to explore the Keep. They find several ruined rooms sacked by orcs. Keth finds some stirges in the kitchen and retreats, locking them in there. They continue to explore and find a spiral stair going up, and a large room that was likely the sleeping area of the orcs that used to live here. There are signs that a beast of some sort smashed its way in here, killed one or more of them, and chased the others off. Wolf finds a spyglass that might be worth something to Halia, and stuff it into his bag of holding. Raggit and Illthorn seem sot have run off and fled from the Hold altogether. They may or may not make it without being caught by the dragon. They head up the spiral stair, expecting the dragon to be there, but at the top of the stair they find a stateroom that was probably once the Orc Chieftan's quarters, again showing signs of dragon destruction in here. And in this room they are met with a Wizard's attack…a cone of cold that catches some of the group off-guard. Keth ran up to him and hit him so hard he ended up in another plane or something and vanishes from site. They then decided to make their way out onto the roof to engage the dragon and hopefully save Pip. Wolfaen sent Algernon out to get within 5 feet of the dragon, taking note that the roof is covered in ice…and it was promptly eaten by Cryovain, who was very disappointed when the appetizer just vanished. Helaena: "Cryovain! Hear me! Thou art a blight that shall be cured this day! Thy name shall be forgotten and thy treasure shall be scattered! And we shall wear thy scales as trophies!" Sensing the intensity of the fight soon to grow, Cryovain stuff the boy down his throat whole. Wolfaen charged in and engaged the dragon with his Dragonslaying Shortsword. He took the rogues jabs but was clearly wounded by his strike. Amarille tossed out a bead from her necklace of fireballs, and enveloped the dragon in flames. Flicker drops a Moonbeam on him as well. Cryovain causes a wall of ice to cut Wolf and Amarille off from the rest, blocking Keth, Helaena, and Flicker from joining the fight. Clearly angry, he takesook to the air. He then flew over to the edge of the Hold, and causes a cloud of frigid fog to engulf the stair to the lower level. He then went down over the edge and banked into the clouds. He swoops back up unexpectedly from behind Amarille, fights through another bead-fireball and snatches her up. He leaps back into the air with her, now over a 100-foot plummet. As the others look on with some terror watching the last moments of the monk. Next to Flicker…the druid notices a visage of a woman standing by her. She is in full plate armor with the badge of a lightning-wrapped tower on it. She looks sad. "You keep poor company with orcs, I see. He's in uniform, I see, what twisted madness is this?" "That's not an Orc. That's Keth!" she says loudly enough she hopes Keth will hear.
