The Silver Mountains

The Lordship known as the Silver Mountains is located in the north-east of the Kingdom of Eleonis and is one of its five territories. Its capital and the residence of the Lords of the Silver Mountains is the city of Matheor in the middle of the territory. The ruling family is House Matheos of the Silver Mountains. The Lordship is located in the mountain range of the same name, but its territory only encompasses about half of the mountain range.

Due to the natural resources found in the mountains, such as lumber, iron and, as the name suggests, silver, the territory is a highly contested one. Few borders have been shifted as often as the border between Eleonis and Urtheon, most of which is the northern border of the Lordship of the Silver Mountains with only a small portion belonging to the Lordship Selenia. Not only Eleonis and Urtheon have had conflicts about this border, the two eleonian Lordships have fought about their border quite a few times in the past as well.

Because of the highly contested territory in which the Lordship is located, its people are a hardened bunch. As a result, the Lordship has one of the most well-trained armies in all of Leanor. This army is of course part of the eleonian army. The Silver Mountains are in no small part responsible for the reputation the eleonian army as a whole has. Throughout history, the Lord's banner with the black pick and hammer on silver ground has become a symbol of strength on the battlefield.

Additionally, many of the blacksmiths creating weaponry for the Kingdom are found here, particularly in the city of Matheor. The famously high-quality eleonian steel, commonly known as Dragonsteel, is made in the region too. This folded steel is much more difficult to create than regular steel, making it rather expensive. It is therefore a symbol of great wealth and status to own one, let alone several Dragonsteel blades. Furthermore, the silver mined in the Silver Mountains is used both to create coins and other items of everyday use and in the creation of fine jewellery.

The people who live in the Silver Mountains who are not soldiers commonly are miners, silversmiths or blacksmiths. Since its territory is mountainous for the most part, there aren't a lot of farmers. Grain and other resources like it are usually imported from other parts of the Kingdom in exchange for things that are rare in these other parts.

While there haven't been any serious conflicts between the Eleonians in about 300 years, it was a territorial dispute between Eleonis and Urtheon that triggered the beginning of the Great War in 1108 CE.

In the wake of this war, the Lordship of the Silver Mountains has become larger than it had ever been before. The border was shifted north almost to the edge of the mountain range, and the easternmost corner of Eleonis, which had previously been part of Horn Valley, also became part of the Lordship.

The Lordship is not only known for its military prowess, it also has a lot of vital resources and some of the most skilled blacksmiths and silversmiths in Eleonis, arguably even in all of Leanor.

Whether or not it actually is the best is hard to say, but work created by artisans from the Silver Mountains is considered high-quality and a status symbol. Dragonsteel swords for example are often owned by rich wealthy and influential people.
