Serbaith Hunter

In the culture of the Serbaith, hunters are considered very important members of society, since the Serbaith live off the land they live on, which requires hunting as well as gathering and growing other types of food. Hunters are usually trained from a very young age, pretty much from the moment they can hold a bow. Not all children go through the training, only those who show promise and a certain talent and will are chosen to become hunters. Most of the time, the children are trained by a parent or close relative, with whom they normally hunt until they make their first kill of a large animal.   This first kill is celebrated in the First Stag Celebration with the entire village, which is also the initiation ritual unto the guild of the hunters. Only after this celebration a hunter is allowed to use the feathers of a bird named Greenling for fletching. This is considered a great honour and privilege and usually gives the hunter a great boost in respect. The age at which this happens isn't fixed, it depends on the skill and training of the specific kid. Some of them stay apprentices for a long time. Who can become a hunter also is not gender-specific, although there usually are more men than women that become hunters.   Someone who was initiated into the hunter's guild may take the surname Lear, which comes from the ancient Acadean word leas, meaning forest, so Lear roughly translates to of the woods. Being a hunter alone obviously doesn't make one a leader by default, but the hunters are also the ones who periodically go to the markets in the larger towns and cities of Baitha to sell things like pelts and leather and buy fabrics and other supplies that their people can't easily make from their available natural resources. This makes the seasoned hunters the ones who see the most of the world, which makes them the people others turn to for advice. The senior hunters essentially run their villages.
