Merpeople

Leanor has access to several seas which are frequented by ships. According to the sailors, these waters are full of mysterious and mythical creatures. Whether any of these creatures actually exist is unknown as of this day. One very frequent tale is that of the merpeople, fish-tailed folk found in the southern seas. Many sailors swear to have come across them at some point in their life.

In the stories, they are usually described as very beautiful creatures, often females, with long fish-like tails instead of legs, long, flowing hair and a slightly blue-ish tint to their skin tone. Their eyes are usually a shade of blue or green. Although they look similar, merpeople should not be confused with sirens, who are at best distantly related. Sirens tend to have red eyes, dark hair and scales and fangs. They, unlike the merfolk, lure sailors to their lairs and eat them alive.

It is often said that merpeople like to sing at night, and that their voices and songs are so beautiful that sailors become enchanted and ships veer off course. It is said that ships sometimes disappear forever, but usually, they turn up again after being missing in action for a while. Merpeople are actually shy and friendly, if a little mischievous. Merfolk mischief is usually rather benevolent, playful, and in many cases even helpful. It is not unheard of that a sailor has been enchanted or allured by a mermaid or sometimes a merman, but these instances, unlike a meeting with a siren, usually end with a broken heart at worst. They like to play tricks on people, but usually nothing (too) harmful, and if sailors were to end up in danger, be it because of their tricks or for unrelated reasons, merfolk are said to try to help to get them back on their way.
