Elemental Magic
For centuries before the arrival of the Acadeans, the Faith of the Four Elements was the main belief system in most of Leanor, and in western Leanor, particularly in Eleonis, it still is. The religion's mythology includes mentions of elemental magic known to early humans millenia ago.
According to the texts, the spirits of the Four Elements created humans to help protect their creation and granted them magical abilities, enabling them to control the elements. Usually, one person could only control one element, and in the early days, humans used these powers for good.
Eventually, the people realized just how powerful they were. Furthermore, the children of people with different elemental abilities sometimes could use both their parent's abilities. Even though those powers were less potent when shared with another element, these people still were particularly powerful. Once the people realized this, they started using their powers for selfish purposes, becoming dangerous and destructive to the very creation they had been made to protect.
It was only a matter of time until there would be a person able to control all four elements. They then would have the power to either save or destroy the world all by themselves. Not wanting to risk this kind of power to be set loose on the world, the spirits of the elements chose to take away the humans' powers. Children were no longer born with powers, and eventually the last of the people with magical abilities died.
Even though there are no traces of elemental powers left in humans today, the followers of the Faith of the Four Elements believe to be descended from those powerful people. The disappearance of the elemental magic is considered a reminder to not be hungry for power, a difficult thing for some to accept.
