Different views on sexuality

Different cultures across Leanor have different perspectives on sexuality ranging from complete acceptance to criminalizing and punishing all kinds of non-heterosexual people with just about everything in between.

Kingdoms in the West

Until recently, non-heterosexual relationships were illegal in all four western kingdoms, and in three of them, they still are. Heterosexuality is considered the norm, anything out of the norm is considered wrong and inappropriate.

Aguilear and Lupear

In Aguilear and Lupear, engaging in non-heterosexual intimate relations is punishable with either a fine or a short prison sentence. In the past, public shaming was also common, though this practice has mostly gone out of fashion. Interestingly, punishments are often harsher for men being intimate with men then they are for women, but the aftermath of such punishments is often much worse for women.

Urtheon

Urtheon is the only place in Leanor where non-heterosexual intimate relations are still punishable by death. In Soane, Urtheon's capital city, the punishment is particularly terrible. Those judged guilty are tied up, weighed down with a bag of rocks and then thrown into Lake Soanis to drown.

Eleonis

In Eleonis, same-sex relationships have been legalized by King Eleothar Angeleos in 1201 CE, but since this is is a fairly recent development, most people, particularly older, more conservative folk still consider them immoral and wrong. As a result, most non-heterosexual folk are still very secretive about their intimate relations. Particularly people in higher social and political circles still have to be careful, as this could affect their reputation, which is a very important thing.

Lands in the East

In the eastern part of Leanor, the views of sexuality are drastically different.

Indigenous Peoples

Particularly the indigenous peoples of the Dragon's ridge and the surrounding area have an entirely different regard to same-sex couples. Not only are they accepted, they are considered a completely normal part of the human experience. Most Valeori, Serbaith and Baithan people are genuniely confused by the notion of seeing them discriminated and punished in the West and consider westerners stuck up and frankly stupid.

Acadean descendants

The non-indigenous people of the region are perhaps less open towards non-heterosexual people. They generally tend to mostly ignore their existence, which isn't the greatest experience, but certainly better than being punished for existing. Since these people are descended from the Acadeans and have mostly kept to their traditions, it is likely that their ancestors treated non-heterosexual people with similar indifference.
