Priority System for character creation

Rather than rolling for one's Attributes and having a number of Skill ranks based on one's chosen class like in many other RPG systems, character creation in Lazuur Avatars uses a priority system. (Those familiar with Shadowrun will recognize it immediately.) When making your character, you have five categories in which you must assign priorities A (highest / most important) through E (lowest / least important). Please refer to the table at the bottom of the page if you're keen to try to get your character set up on your own. The GM has an iOS spreadsheet which automates much of the work if you're looking for a bit of guidance.

the five Priorities...

  • Race — each Race has a list of priorities it can be chosen at and bonus points in parentheses. These bonus points can be used to increase the special Attributes Luck and Magic (if the character is magically active). Additionally, they can be spent to improve Physical and Mental Attributes that the race has a bonus on (greater than 6 maximum).

  • Attributes — you may spend these points to boost your character’s starting Attributes which all start at 1. Each race has bonuses or penalties which alter their maximum for each stat (which is usually 6). These points can’t be added to Special Attributes like Luck and Magic, however.

  • Mage — if you don’t plan to play a Magically-active character, set this Priority to ‘E’ — mundane; otherwise, the higher this Priority is, the more points they’ll have in the Magic special Attribute. In brief, an Aspected Mage only has access to Sorcery, Conjure, or Enchant (in addition to Assense). Full Mages can learn and use all four Magic-related Skills. Adepts don’t cast spells but ‘spend’ their Magic Attribute to buy powers. (see ???)

  • Skills — points to spend in Active and Knowledge Skills

  • Resources — gold with which to buy starting equipment (, page #). Your character is expected to have spent more of their initial funds on equipment, but can also buy additional months of their lifestyle and have a bit of savings (probably in a ‘security company’ account).

character age

Younger characters tend to have higher Attribute priority with Race selected at lower levels, and lower Skill priority, while older characters have the opposite. Hit up the GM for some ideas as to your background character before you start putting pencil to paper and the increased depth of personality which arises will result in a more dynamically playable character.

hirelings / henchmen

Depending on the campaign starting locale and number of players, you may be asked to make a pair of characters, the second of which will have lower priorities (like C, D, D, E, E instead of A through E). In this type of situation, the secondary character is generally an aide of the primary (and is sometimes the aide of another player’s primary character for the sake of more interesting dynamics).

character archetypes

The usual fantasy RPG archetypes can all be built in Lazuur Avatars and the freedom of the Attribute & Skill system means that you can customize a character to be (or become) good at whatever you want them to excel at. Here are some common archetypes to consider. Focus on one idea for a specialist or combine multiple concepts to make a diversified Jack-of-all-trades:

  • melee fighter
  • tanky fighter
  • tactician
  • face / negotiator / swindler
  • bard / chanter
  • priest or shaman (war / healing / support) / druid
  • physical adept (D&D monk)
  • ranged fighter / scout
  • sneak / thief
  • wizard / sorcerer
  • conjurer
  • artisan / craftsperson (alchemist / blacksmith / inventor / etc.)

To complete the character creation process, you will also likely have some Experience Points (XP) depending on the background of your character and the campaign setting/situation. Check out , page # for details on how to spend XP. Additionally, you can choose a few Edges and Flaws — minor to significant advantages and disadvantages which bring more color to your character. See page 24 for details or the list on page 28.
