The Five Great Factions
The Five Great Factions of Landrithel consist of the Sword Bearing, Universal Abyss, Wandering Heart, Holy Light, and Hidden Knife factions. They control everything in the settled portions of Landrithel. Their current coexistence is stable, though they are prone to territorial disputes. There hasn't been a full-scale war since the defeat of Holy Light by Sword Bearing, in which Holy Light survived by the strength of their religion. Holy Light was greatly weakened during the encounters but still has enough power and land to be considered a Great Faction. During this war, Wandering Heart was an impartial power that assisted both sides. While Universal Abyss and Hidden Knife allied with Sword Bearing and Holy light respectively.
The Sword Bearing faction are currently in the strongest position with thirteen sub-factions that are under their rule. The Sword Bearing, due to their strong position and victory over Holy Light, currently have a stranglehold on a majority of the main continent. Their ambition has been quelled for now, but the current leaders are quick to stoke the flames of war. Sword Bearing members are defined by the swords they have at their waist, their hot-headed nature, and how high their noses are in the air. Their current leader is a woman named Ellen Blackburn. Though they have a faction leader a majority of the power comes from their council of five elders that have ruled over the Sword Bearing for the last 250 years.
The Universal Abyss is a cabal consisting of six sub-factions that's main goal is to deepen their understanding of the core mechanics of the world through the practice of arcane arts. During the last great war, they allied themselves with the Sword Bearing because they were offered a large magically dense portion of land on which they could practice their magic. Universal Abyss members will stop at nothing to continue their research once they find the section of magic they want to pursue. Due to the byproducts of this magical obsession the lands of the Universal Abyss are quite chaotic but abound in precious materials and forbidden knowledge.
The Wandering Heart has eleven sub-factions that follow them and are a nomadic city of merchants, artists, and free spirits. The Wandering Heart generally operate outside the standard law of the land because they despise being chained by rules. Despite this though they are one of the strongest political powers that are currently on Landrithel. They approach almost all of the problems presented by the other factions with impartiality and fairness. This fact along with their massive amount of wealth lead to them being one of the most influential groups to rule Landrithel. Although they are neutral politically, the current leader, Albert Covington, is one of the most powerful known existences on the continent. When he was young and still practicing his Craft, Freed Spirit, he manifested his *Soul Aura* as a massive vehicle which is approximately 500 sq. miles large. As he rose in power his citizens started to build within it, this lead to the giant roaming city of Dorado.
The Hidden Knife faction controls five sub-factions in an underground kingdom that mainly comprises of thieves and assassins. That's what the legends say, the truth of the matter is that only Tartarus, the Hidden Knife's metropolis, is made up primarily of rogues who would do anything for their next payout. The strongest of these rogues is Carden Grimm who, along with his band of seven "trusted" advisors, rule the Hidden Knife. The rest of the kingdom does whatever they can to survive in the harsh underground environment. The Hidden Knife quite often sell their services to whoever offers the most money, even being known to switch mid-job if they're offered enough compensation. The ability they have to complete jobs is legendary, and most everyone in Landrithel have heard of their epic escapades.
The last of the Great factions is the Holy Light, they are currently the weakest they have ever been due to the oppressive force that the Sword Bearing have placed upon them after the war. Despite this pressure, the Holy Light has survived and is striving to regain their former glory. The current Archbishop is a young woman named Arianna Alwyn. Arianna was prophesized, before birth, to save the Holy Light from destruction. She's currently the strongest archbishop to have appeared in the last 500 years and is continuing to become more powerful. Due to her strength, devotion, and charisma, the five sub-factions that follow her lead have had a tremendous increase in popularity in the last five years. This, in turn, has strengthened their capitol city immensely, with the rise in population and strength the Holy Light is quickly becoming the powerhouse it once was.
