North-pointer

Of course magic is better, but here's a bit of knowledge for you: Not everyone has access to magic.

The north-pointer is a two wheeled cart that uses gears connected to the wheels to determine where north is.

Utility

By always pointing north the north-pointer allows non-magic users to also find their way in the world. At least as long as the ground in relatively flat.

Manufacturing

The cart is mostly a wooden construction, with the various connectors being made out of metal. The creator thinks it to be possible to make a smaller version out of metal, but the cost would make it unfeasable.

Social Impact

It has not had a wide impact, chiefly because it is such a rare item that is mostly seen as a curiosity for rich people.

Inventor(s)

It was invented a few decades ago by the woodcarver in Erion.

Access & Availability

Because it is a large, machine that has no other use, it is very rarely used.

Complexity

There is a moderate amount of complexity, most of which stems from the fact that the ratio between the various cogs is very specific and also needs to be manufactured with a decent amount of accuracy.
