A sword isn't meant to be safe Plot in Lance Breaker | World Anvil

A sword isn't meant to be safe

History will teach us nothing

Humanity ventured to the stars, sending cryo-ships with everything needed to start new civilizations far, far away. Under the flag of the United Nations, these Starseeds brought materials and laws with them, everything designed to stand solid and learn from history's mistakes. From universal income and initial basic law, to politically-neutral scientists protected by their own supersoldiers.   On Ymir, the system has stood for three decades, despite being challenged by a dangerous disease that requires constant vigilance. But as new people are born, the lessons old are being unlearned, and domestic terrorism is on the rise. A surveillance state that cripples itself with strict regulations, is turning out to be vulnerable to the conspiracy theories flying around.   There are those advocating for more freedom. There are those that want the privacy laws withdraw, and the Battle Spears to be released from the Science Department and used as a weapon against the terrorists. Tensions rise while out there, the hostile planet is still there with its aggressive predators and unknown diseases. The powder keg is at risk of blowing up, tearing apart everything that the people have worked for.

Masters of our own fate

Valya Ymirborn is a career officer in the Ymir military, having served as a Defender from the age of 16. The privacy laws let her keep her past a secret, but her secrecy won't hide her skills or know-how. She was recently severely injured during a terrorist attack, yet despite her injuries she managed to prevent fatalities. Now, the Battle Spears have recruited her, giving her the Superserum that will grant her superhuman abilities.   Now, Valya has to navigate a political quagmire as societal tensions rise, while also learning to wield her new powers. As she comes to term with what she now can do, she still doesn't know who she can trust. There is nobody, not even herself, who doesn't have some secret agenda that impacts everything they do. And worst of all is that voice in the back of her head, a ticking timebomb that she must constantly constrain lest it lashes out and destroys everything she's worked so hard for.   While those around Valya begin to become aware of her knowing more than she really should, and learn to deal with her hardening nature, Ymir is still standing. But for how long will this be, will the status quo recover or destroy itself? And will Valya break a lance for independence, or end up breaking the Battle Spears?
