The Dreamer's Lover
A man sleeps peacefully, dreams filled with sweet memories of a woman long dead. She lies beside him, hand caressing his face with a soft and sleepy expression. It started a few weeks ago, one dream a night with the lingering memory of her touch come morning. Then it was three, and then it was constant. He sees her in the waking world now, her image following him in his daily life. Around the home or at the mines while he works, she follows and waits for him to dream once more so she can touch him again. They long to be together again, and the man has thought of hastening his end to be with her.
No one else sees her, and at first, he thought he was merely imagining her presence. But then she started moving things in the house, knocking over bowls or running into a chair. He wrote it off as clumsiness...
Until she became more aggressive. He woke up in the night to scratches on his face or arms, where in his dreams, she had gently brushed her fingers against him. Then, bruises started to appear. He tried to write it off as his own clumsiness, but then they began to look like handprints.
Acquisition:
A man goes running down the street, expression terrified as he glances behind him to see if he's being followed. He bumps into the party and apologizes before begging them to help him.
Half-crazed with fear, he hides behind them and points at the open air. "She's coming! Oh gods, make her go away. Please!"
His begging seems to do something, because he slowly begins to calm down and murmur that she's gone for now.
The Ghost:
The party will be dealing with an enemy that's invisible at first. She can only be seen at the mines during the day or at his home at night.
They'll have to draw her out. This can be done by using him as bait. The best way to do it is to wait outside the home or mines until he calls the party for help. The party can come in and deal with her then.
Resolution:
- The party must banish her. There will be a fight inside his house or in the mines where she followed him, GM's choice.
- The man can be killed if it's not dealt with in a timely manner. The party will have one day to find a way to draw her out and get rid of her before she kills him.
Rewards:
- He'll pay the party a modest sum, plus give them one magical artifact that belonged to his wife, likely an amulet or ring.
