Broodmother

A Broodmother is a familial and political title for the leader of any given Naga-Tel village or tribe. About 4 feet larger than their other male or female counterparts, the Broodmother provides eggs for the entire tribe. All hatchlings of a Broodmother feel a powerful (but not unbreakable) emotional bond toward her. She does not spend time raising any hatchlings, but the entirety of the tribe born to her follows her command.    Broodmothers mostly produce males, but will create one or two eggs per batch that would become female (determinable by size). Usually, when a broodmother dies, one of the male offspring must undergo a transition into broodmotherhood via a voluntary metamorphosis process that takes 1-2 months. When a male becomes the larger, female broodmother, the remainging Naga-Tel will fertilize the batch before departing from the village or tribe entirely. As they feel no deep chemical/pheromonal bond to the new Broodmother, the village will start anew.   In the most recent centuries, this is not always the case. Tradition is still strongest with the Naga-Tel, more than any people of Laminarum, but their kind is not without an individualist spark. Any individual may leave the tribe at their behest (though some groups outlaw it, sentencing those who wish to leave to death due to desertion).   Some of the best Broodmothers are said to be the males that depart from their tribe after the death of their own Broodmother. This process provides more potential life experience for the Broodmother, though many Naga-Tel who go on to live their own lives have no desire to metamorphose into a Broodmother.   Alternatively, if a female egg survives and is fertilized, it will become a Broodmother immediately to which the tribe is already bonded. This is often avoided because if the original Broodmother does not end up dying, allegiances can be split.
