• Smugglers transport both illegal and legal goods mostly to avoid government interference with that trade.
• Most governments try to collect taxes on items as they move into or out of their lands.
• These taxes raise the price of items and cut into the profits of the traders and merchants, so often they will turn to smugglers to try and get the goods moved without those taxes being collected.
