Safomir, the Grim Reaper

Safomir Banner

In the very beginning, this didn't have a body at all. It just slowly pulled bits and pieces from the souls it found. If you see what it looks like now, you look upon death. If you look upon death, it has come for you.

The Spirit of Death

Books, grimoires, tales, and folklore all over the world write about a macabre figure of death. Even though death may be perceived differently from one land to another, the first question any writer ever asks is this: how can one possibly describe death?   Different people across time have answered this question in different ways, some after careful thought, others after only a few glimpses and notions based on instinct. In essence, these authors mindlessly grasp at a mere concept of who this being really is. For the bitter truth is this: only the dead know the answer of this spirit of death that watches over every living thing.   Safomir is the essence of death, a god-like spirit that shepherds the souls of the dead from Materia into the Veil, where these souls are carried on into the realms beyond. In the time of the Great Divergence, when chaos was ushered into Brinomir, Safomir was birthed.   Death culminated on itself as mortal fought mortal, and god fought god. Out of it came a new essence that took up its own territory in the fringes between the realms of gods and the realm of mortals. This spirit had no shape. It simply let itself be carried from one dying soul to the next. With each death, essence was added onto this spirit as these souls passed through its realm. Over time, the spirit began to take shape, reflecting the very souls of the dead that drifted in his space.   Then, the spirit began to feel something within these souls. Tugs from their spiritual hearts — some good, some evil — pleading a certain way out. The spirit felt the realm beyond these souls wanted, and like a puzzle piece meant to be fit, passed these souls through its realm into the hands of many different gods, those the souls were meant to go.   Such has the spirit called Safomir existed to this day, a spirit of death who comes when a mortal's final moment is felt, to sever their soul and be carried into the Veil, whether they are ready or not.

Dwelling

Safomir flows all through the Veil, and manifests in Materia when a life ends and a soul is carried to the Veil. But, like a guardian, the Grim Reaper watches over all the Veil from the Spires of Styx which swim the very edges between the Veil and Materia, stopping living mortals that try to trespass within it. Those who die, should they have lived in service to Safomir, are remade in the image of the Veil as new spirits that serve Safomir.

Domains

Safomir represents the following domains:   Death. Like an instinct, Safomir ferries the spirits of dead mortals through the Veil, carrying them to the places their spirits deserve. To the Grim Reaper, death is not a tragedy, but an appointment. The task for the mortal is to be ready when it comes.

Alignment

Safomire represents the following alignment:   Neutral. The only order Safomir seeks is the sanctity of the Veil and the absoluteness of death. The good and the bad, he waits ahead of them all for when their day comes. No death is random.

Symbol

The common holy symbol used to represent Safomir is a profile skeleton holding up a sphere, representing the Veil.

My father used to scare me as a little girl, telling me if I didn't behave the Shinigami would come and he'd be taken away from me. Thirty years later... he was.
