Chomper, the Bullete Adventurer

Aaarng. Hrrrn. Oooohn!
~ Chomper ~

There once was a halfling from Westerin named David Locklin. He came from a long line of fishermen on his father's side. Expected to continue that trend, but as an up and coming artisan of exploration, he was instead hopeful to start a guild that could explore the deepest pasts of the world. Though the guild was formed, it faced many hard years of exciting promises yet shallow results. The continued disappointment threatened to close David's halls for good unless a miracle happened.   Little did David know that that miracle came in the form of a rock solid, bullet-shaped bundle of joy named Chomper.

Temple of Ferno

A bullete mother who lays an egg will care for it up to the point it hatches, at which point the mother leaves and the baby is forced to grow and fend for itself. Such was the case for Chomper who was hatched somewhere north of a temple dedicated to a fire elemental named Ferno in Tepuisica. But, naturally large and strong, he was often the predator.

Bulletes are typically isolated and don't wander too far; the temple grounds was Chomper's common territory. However, unlike many others, Chomper was a very curious and explorative one, sometimes going so far that he would get into life-threatening trouble which he'd escape from, only to be drawn back out of curiosity the next time.   But, nothing ever interested the bullete more than the massive temple that stood in the middle of his territory, a place he'd never been able to go into, but a mystery his natural instincts wished to one day uncover.

The Day the Door Opened

Chomper initially met the halfling adventurer, David, at the closed main door into the temple. In those days, the halfling was on his last legs, financially. If nothing came from a journey like this, his guild would be finished, and David's lifework reduced to memory.   Unsure if he was predator, prey, or somewhere in between, Chomper stalked him from below the ground, watching the halfling spend day after day figuring out a puzzle that kept the door sealed, cooked fish his only meals. The day he saw that door open into the deep unknown inside, excitement grew in Chomper, and coincidentally, an attachment grew with David. He was a man who could unlock places Chomper had never gone before, so naturally, he followed the halfling inside.   But, David was quickly stopped when he approached a wide pool of quicksand inside. At the other end, he knew a button would raise a stone bridge out from the ground, but had no way to get over there safely. Chomper sensed the halfling's puzzlement and wished to help, because he wanted the man to unlock even more of this place.
Taking a chance, he revealed himself from the ground, surprising the halfling. It was a cautious union at first, but over some leftover fish from the night before, David was relieved to see the bullete harmless. Chomper burrowed through the quicksand with ease, sure he could trust this halfling, and rising from the other side, head-bashed the button, raising the bridge for David.   Little did he know, that small act was the very thing that saved his adventure, and started a life-long companionship.   It took some practice for Chomper to understand what David would say or command sometimes, but together the two explored every inch of this Old World temple down to the very last copper piece, a fortune that later on saved the guild due to both its quantity and exotic designs when David sailed back with Chomper. Couple that with the adorable bullete that turned into the face of the guild, and the Extraordinary Expeditions Guild grew into the largest exploration guild of the Marine Era.   Chomper has gone on many other adventures with David ever since, sating his explorative curiosity several times over as he's walked upon each of the different continents of Kustaanos. Though today he certainly isn't as small as when David first met him, Chomper has continued to be the halfling's counterpart in situations he can't get through on his own.

You'd think the Scepter of Ferno was my most valuable find in that temple. No, it was actually a bullete that loves to chase dragonflies.

Actions

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: 1d20+7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 30 4d12+4 piercing damage.   Deadly Leap. If Chomper jumps at least 15 feet as part of its movement, it can then use this action to land on its feet in a space that contains one or more other creatures. Each of those creatures must succeed on a DC 16 Strength or Dexterity saving throw (target's choice) or be knocked prone and take 14 3d6+4 bludgeoning damage plus 14 3d6+4 slashing damage. On a successful save, the creature takes only half the damage, isn't knocked prone, and is pushed 5 feet out of Chomper's space into an unoccupied space of the creature's choice. If no unoccupied space is within range, the creature instead falls prone in Chomper's space.
