Phoenix Island

Phoenix Island is an island on the planet Armageddon, located in the northern part of the planet's world-ocean, between Armageddon Secundus and the Fire Wastes.

During the Third War for Armageddon, the island came under heavy assault by the invading orks, as the island hosted a major spaceport used to ferry supplies to the orbital naval station of St. Jowen's Dock. This spaceport was one of the few avenues that Imperial reinforcements could use to reach the planet's surface.

The main assault came when the orks landed a Rok in the Fire Wastes to the northeast of the island, effectively blocking off the Heliopolis Bridge and preventing any non-airborne reinforcements from reaching the island. The Space Marines of the Black Dragons Chapter responded, fielding a full nine companies to prevent the orks from seizing the valuable Nadala Gorge Ore Mine.

Unfortunately, the Black Dragons arrived too late to stop the orks from breaking through Imperial defences and storming the island en masse. The Heliopolis Bridge was destroyed and ork saboteurs had infiltrated both the mines and the docks, wreaking havoc on Imperial supply lines. The orks' destruction of the island's facilities also released so much chemical waste and pollution that the island's atmosphere became unbreathable, which forced many of the remaining defenders to either withdraw completely or be forced underground. The Space Marines, however, were still able to fight thanks to their power armour. They engaged the orks in several battles which reduced much of the island's surface to a toxic, acidic mire that even the orks could not survive. The Black Dragons eventually broke the main ork force at the Valkyrie Bay Refinery, although they were forced to destroy the facility in the process.
