The Twelve Sages

Article Contents

The Twelve Sages of the Upper World are Tanith or Aseth that were chosen by the Crystal Guardians to protect the crystal hearts of the Gods. They are all very powerful spellcasters and each individual Sage is the strongest caster of each of their specific elements of magic. The method for how they were chosen is not always obvious and only the Crystal Guardians know the metric for how a person is worthy of being the next Sage of a particular crystal.

Sages are normally chosen when they are young, usually in their teens. After being chosen, they are to visit every temple to receive the blessing of each crystal heart. Then they become a Sage and maintain this title throughout their lives. While their job is to guard the crystal hearts, some sages ignore this and wander the Upper World Instead.

Uncton, Sage of Vita

Uncton is an old Tanith that has been the Sage of Life in Vita for just over 150 years. His replacement should reveal themselves to the Crystal Guardians any day now. Since Vita is so small, Uncton is the Sage and leader of the island. He has made it so humans are welcome here on this island, and he has the clerics heal anyone who needs it.

Uncton was chosen by the crystal Guardians when he was 15 years old and didn't understand why, as he didn't even know how to cast healing magic. He realized why a few years later when he become one of the most powerful clerics in the history of the Upper World.

Ophia, Sage of Muertos

Ophia is a thin, frail Tanith and the Sage of Death. She is one of the most dangerous women in the Upper World. She has absolute control over the forces of life and death and no one who challenges her is able to get away with their lives. She instills fear into everyone who knows of her, even though she is blind and has broken fangs.

Ophia was chosen by the Crystal Guardians when she was 10 years old. Ophia had the absolute most powerful death magic of anyone on the island, even more than the actual Sage of Death at the time. Ophia only knows how to cast life and death magic, and she is very good at both.

Althea, Sage of Aldea

Althea is a Tanith and the daughter of Chief Thrask of Aldea. she was chosen to be the nest Sage of Wind when she was 13, when a young human fell out of the sky with their mother. Althea tried to cast healing magic as the mother expired, but then she managed to heal the child before they ended up dying too. Her willpower is what caused the Crystal Guardians to recognize her as the next Sage of Wind.

Althea spent the next few years still growing up in Aldea, then when she was 16 she was allowed to start her sage training. In seven years, she has recieved the blessing of 9 of the twelve crystals, and is a master of every type of magic except time.

Levenos, Sage of Atlantis

Levenos was an Aseth that passed away recently at the extreme old age of 1024. He was one of the last beings of the Upper World that remembered the world that came before. He was the first Water Sage chosen by the Crystal Guardians. All of the original sages were alive on the middle world when it was destroyed and they were turned into Tanith or Aseth.

With his death, there is a crisis currently going on in the city of Atlantis. Without a Water Sage to control it, the Leviathan is roaming freely through the ocean sphere, causing destruction wherever it goes. the Crystal Guardians still haven't chosen a new Sage and no one know when they will.

Odo, Sage of Kaban

Odo is a Tanith and the Sage of Earth. He was chosen by the crystal guardians when he was 15. He ignored the guardians for over a decade until he finally went to visit all of the crystals to recieve their blessing. Even after recieving the blessings, he wandered for another 10 years before returning to the Deserts of Kaban to do his job. He wasn't there for long and went wandering once again.

Odo is regularly absent from the Earth Temple, knowing the Crystal Guardians will most likely destroy anything that might think to attack it. He is one of the most powerful of the Sages, and if he ever has to display that power, whoever is fighting him is going to have a difficult time.

Boina, Sage of Mardia

Boina is an Aseth with darkened black and red scales and is the Sage of Fire. She's been the sage of fire for roughly three hundred years. When she was young, she jumped into the volcano on a dare when she was young. She survived with her magic, but because of her action, she was chosen by the Crystal Guardians to be the next Fire Age.

The Temple of Fire is in the heart of the volcano in Maridia. Very few beings are able to survive there without the use of Ice magic. Boina is no exception and her use of Ice magic is almost as powerful as her fire magic is. Only the Ice Sage compares in terms of ice power.

Mirelda, Sage of Aurora

Mirelda is a Tanith and the Sage of Ice. She is one of the more beastly tanith and has thick white fur and black stripes. That fur definitely helps her survive in the biting cold Ice Temple, as does the fire magic she knows. She was chosen by the Crystal Guardians many decades ago when she was about 12. She went out into a blizzard to search for a friend and when she got back to town, the guardians were there.

After Mirelda visited all the crystals to get their blessings, she went to the Ice temple way up in the floating glacier above Aurora and hasn't left in many years now. Many people are quite about her health but pilgrims that travel to the temple always bring back news that she is okay.

Rofin, Sage of Chiakis

Rofin is an Aseth and the Sage of Thunder. He was chosen by the Crystal Guardians around a century ago when he was 17. He was jumping between the various spires around the thunder islands and he pulled off a feat that very few others have attempted or will ever attempt. He was using magic to speed himself up until he was able to dodge lightning.

After Rofin traveled to all the crystals to get their blessings, he went back to Chiakis. He regularly trains outside the thunder temple to continue honing his reflexes, where the storms are the strongest and most frequent. His speed is such that no known weapon or magic can actually catch up with him.

The Sage of Sylvia

Since the island of Sylvia fell to the Middle World below several centuries ago, there has been no new Sage of Nature. This is because there is no crystal heart to guard and there are no Crystal Guardians to search for a new Sage. The previous Sage of Nature was unable to protect the crystal, so had their name stricken from this history books and erased from history.

Older beings of the Upper world know the sage's name. A few of the older sages knew them personally, but they all refuse to say it for fear of drawing the wrath of the other Crystal Guardians. The Sage of Nature destroyed the crystal heart and she will be forgotten. The Gods Demand it be so.

The Three Sages of Time

Since the location of the three islands of time, Past, Present, and Future, are known by very few people in the Upper World except by the other Sages, the identity of the three Sages of Time are a secret, and the Sages each agreed to perpetuate this secret except for those who can find the Islands of Time.

Non-Sages know that there are in fact three of them. One is a man and the other two are women. That is all they know. They do not know what their race is or what variety of Tanith or Aseth they are. They do not know their ages, and they do not know their skill level with magic, how they were chosen by the Crystal Guardians, or what it is they do.
