Step By Step Dragonlance Character Creation

Please follow these steps when creating your starting characters for our Dragonlance 5E campaign.
Additional Races and Subraces, Feats, Spell Casting Rules and more can be found in "PDF sources for PC creation"
Allowed Sources are: PHB, Xanathar's, Tasha's, Monsters of the Multiverse, the 5E DL:SotDQ adventure, Ebberon (no abberant dragonmarks), and the PDF Sources following the notes in the linked article.
  1. Roll for Ability Scores:
  2. 3D6 Down The Line, Average score 13+, 1 Swap between two scores allowed.
This will be done together on Roll20 to quickly roll a stat block with the average score calculated.

  3. Choose a Class:
  4. I'll do everything possible to accomodate as much of the players wants into our game, but this needs to be a back and forth conversation. Some classes were super rare back in 1984 and some straight up weren't created yet. I may have to say NO to your inital class/subclass ideas if they just don't make sense for the setting.
That being said a slight re-flavor can go a long way. For instance a Druid of the Land could easily be incorporated into the Mages of High Sorcery.
The Warlock Sublasses in the PDF sources article are my homebrew and may be subject to ocassional rebalance fixes.

Reminder: for the first 4-6 sesssions Divine Magic is not available to the world of Krynn. If you want you can multiclass into a Divine Caster at level 4 or switch into a level 4 version of your character rebuilt with all 4 levels as a divine caster.

  5. Choose a Race:
  6. The starting group can have a maximum of 2 Rare Race PCs and at most 1 Kender. Very Rare Races are not available at the start of the game and they may or may not be unlocked after encountering them organically during the game.

Standard Races: Human, Half-Elf, Hill Dwarf, Kender
Rare Races: Mountain Dwarf, Elf, Gnome, Goblin, Hobgoblin, Half-Ogre
Very Rare Races: Ogre, Minotaur, Sea Elf

  7. Choose a Background:
  8. Please refer to this article detailing "Dragonlance backgrounds and feats from Shadow of the Dragonqueen"
If playing an arcane spell caster I highly reccomend that you select the Mage of High Sorcery background.
Please don't make my NPC's have to chase you down and "Eliminate the Renegade"

  9. Choose a Starting Feat:
  10. Please refer to this article detailing "Dragonlance backgrounds and feats from Shadow of the Dragonqueen"

  11. Intergrate an Archetype:
  12. While not a hard requirement some common character archetypes have been identified as being strongly suited to the Dragonlance Adventures.
The article "PC Archetypes"lays out a "Core Four" Archetypes and Additional Archetypes.

  13. Finalize your character at 3rd level:
  14. This is the character you will use at the start of the Main Campaign.

  15. Create a Commoner version of your character:
  16. Using The Commoner: Level 0 Character Rules PDF available from the PDF Sources Article.
Create a lvl 1/4 version of your character from approximately 6 years prior to the start of the campaign.
We will play a short Prelude showcasing how the party formed up and answered their call to adventure.
During the Prelude your Commoner Version will progress from lvl 1/4 to lvl 1/2 and concludes with all the party members becomming lvl 1

  17. Develop your backstories, bonds, NPC's:
  18. We'll be using some Character/Party/Town Generation tools from an OSR RPG called Beyond the Wall .
Specifically we'll be using the tables within the various Character Playbooks, think of the Character Playbooks like more specific Fantasy Archetypes from the "Retired Veteran" to the "Nobleman's Wild Daughter". There are over 30 Playbooks that I have reviewed and feel are a match with a Dragonlance game.
These random tables will create a few highlights in your character's backstory by creating NPCs, Town Locations, and Direct Connections between your PC and the other PCs. The tables also can also add items, cantrips, weapon specialization/training, or tool profciencies to your character.
You're free of course to write up more backstory, but at minimum I expect you to incorporate what's developed as the group rolls their Character Playbooks.

  19. Pick you token color and Cast your PC:
  20. Pick a distinct (as close to primary as possible) color and cast your PC with an actor that I should be able to find a good selection of pictures online to create your Roll20 tokens from.
I.E. Blue and Nathan Fillion from Firefly

(ANY ADDITIONAL BACKSTORIES MUST BE NO MORE THAN 1 PAGE LONG)
