Elemental Sickness

Among the druids of Kruos and others who have formed particularly deep connections to the elementals who permeate this world, Elemental Sickness is viewed as a disease more devastating than any other. Also referred to as the "silence", it is marked by a complete inability to "hear" or make a connection with any of the prime elements. The sufferer loses all ability to commune with the elements and is imbued with a feeling of complete detachment from the songs of the earth, air, fire, and water they may have always known.
The cause of the sickness has been theorized frequently over the centuries but not yet been proven. The most prominent theory states that one may contract the illness by close proximity to someone who has crossed the elemental barrier from Dalaein recently but this is based on anecdotal evidence which is flimsy at best. Truly, if simple proximity was all it took to become ill then the disease would have overhwhelmed this world long ago. Nevertheless, there have been incidents where those known to have crossed the barrier have been ostracized, prevented from entering cities, and even maimed or killed for fear of spreading the sickness, despite no proof and little evidence to indicate that they pose a danger to anyone.
Tthe greatest minds in the world and most powerful druids have all leant their wit and wisdom to understanding the sickness and are seemingly no closer to understanding its cause than when it was first discovered long ago. But, while no purported cure has yet been guaranteed effective, many of those afflicted do find that their connections to the elements may return after a time. The true danger of the affliction is the depression and hopelessness felt by those it affects. Many simply lose the will to live and take their own lives rather than continue to live with the "silence."
