Draconic Guard

The chief of the clans of Ziamid is also referred to as the Ziamidian monarch and they traditionally make their home in the lush part of the country that they believe looks like the snout of a dragon. Such is this belief that the clans of Ziamid has all taken various dragons as their totems and there is a general draconic theme across the country.   Nowhere is this theme more prevalent than at the court of the King or Queen and in order to reinforce their supremacy they maintain an elite guard, simply called the Draconic Guard, to protect the royal family from harm. The guard takes this duty very seriously and it is considered a high honor to be chosen to apply for a position within their ranks.   As befits their role and the draconic theme thereof it is traditional for each member of the Draconic Guard to eschew their given name for one that might be given to a dragon. Each takes that name and identifies by it for the rest of their life, even if they are lucky enough to retire peacefully from the guard once their martial prowess is no longer sufficient.   At times, the presumptuous naming of the guard has drawn the ire of a real dragon or two and this has led to some rather ironic battles between the offended beasts and the Ziamidians. In all but one known instance of these conflicts the guard has chosen to honorably disband and the monarch soothes the dragon's ego with much treasure for their horde and they go away quietly. In each case the guard was reconstituted after a period of time when the monarch felt the dragon was no longer focused in their direction.   The one exception was when a black dragon known as Ynillia decided that the guard of Queen Daesys of Ziamid had been far too presumptuous. This time, instead of accepting tribute and going away quietly, the dragon killed each member of the guard during a Ziamidian Festival at which the queen was appearing. With the Draconic Guard dispatched, Ynillia then set upon the queen herself and ate her in front of her horrified subjects. Following the dragon's attack there was no Draconic Guard for over a decade and from then on any imagery or totems that reflected black dragons have been considered bad luck across the land.
