Disaster / Destruction
The Makan Empire's demise begins with the ascension of the highly incompetent Emperor Takano Aryiatsu in 802 AR. Emperor Takano submitted to the wills of conspiring advisors and made policies that limited the powers of the Emperor, which made for a series of short-reigned and ineffective emperors. The Advisors and courtiers eventually rebelled anyway and began a cavalcade of internal wars. Mako fell into a slow and irreparable decline until rebellious factions siezed the capital of Magasako itself in 890 AR.
Civil wars plagued the Empire throughout its early years as well as its final ones. Upon the ascension of Emperor Izumi Aryiatsu to the throne in 802 AR, his jealous brother Takano organized an assassination attempt which succeeded.
This event alone is hardly unique compared to Emperors and Dynasties past, but the new Emperor Takano made several key mistakes in appointing his courtiers and advisers. He had a strange affinity for culturally Seikan advisers, all of whom Emperor Takano trusted unquestioningly. After a series of poor policies dividing the Makan legions among regional landholders and requiring a newly formed council to approve imperial decisions, Takano mysteriously disappeared. In his stead soon emerged Mao Guo Aly-a-song, a notable former courtier of Takano's, who proclaimed himself emperor.
Immediately, rebellions broke throughout the Empire, and the Makan government was late in responding to most. They were further weakened when Mao Guo was killed in a palace fire, and the throne (now charred) was taken by Liang Fu in a coup. Mere months after his coronation, a Makan loyalist rebellion reached the capital, besieged it, and stormed the throne room - beheading Liang on the spot
After a series of quick successions, Feng Zhou eventually stepped in to put a halt to things. With an army made up of Kodran, Makan, and Seikan peasants he was able to take a secure the throne for good. In this tumultuous time, he knew at least that the Empire did not stand to maintain its original borders, and so pulled all resources to look over the main island - which he renamed to Tongiu.
