Rego

The Rego are dragonborn descendants of the draconic footsoldiers from the Ascendancy of Dragons and the Dragonwars. When draconic rule finally collapsed a few centuries ago, the Rego retreated to the Chëar Mountains, which have since taken on their Calpianized name - "Tisear."

Their lands haver recently been annexed by the Calpian Empire, which covets the rich tin mines in the region. On the whole, the Rego did not resist this annexation, though a few nationalistic groups have formed underground resistance movements.

Naming Traditions

Family names

The Rego organize their family names in terms of their draconic ancestries (scale colors) and some descriptive term. For example a family with a strong green ancestry might call themselves Viridianvale. Some families express their family name in Draconic, others in the common Calpian tongue, and still others express variants of their family name in either language, depending on the audience.

Culture

Major language groups and dialects

The Rego speak a dialect of Draconic as their native tongue. Most scholars simply call it Rego Draconic, though the Rego refer to their language as Ïrego. Virtually all Rego also speak Calpian.

Culture and cultural heritage

The Rego are all too aware that most sentient races believe them to be political agents of the Material Dragons. While pride in their draconic ancestry runs deep, few Rego still endorse the tyrannical rule their ancestors fought to defend.

Shared customary codes and values

The Rego venerate the following gods (Draconic names in parentheses):

  • Permanance & Stability: Aslak (Eszhek)
  • Justice: Chehnsu (Zheszu)
  • Evil: Tamahkarliq (Tamakhadzhiq)
  • Fire and Family: Vulcris (Vuzhdis)

Additionally, most families have adopted an Ethereal Dragon demigod as the familial patron. In some cases, these patrons take active roles in the family's welfare; in others they are absent.

Common Etiquette rules

The common daily greeting is, "The skies and the earth."

Art & Architecture

The Rego build on a grand scale. Their edifices are stone, often faced with gleaming marble or limestone. The do not use arches. Instead they make extensive use of corbeling. Roofs are generally tiled with shingles made of shale or slate.

They have no art of their own. The Rego do have reproductions of famous draconic works of art that date back thousands of years, though few understand their meaning or importance in this age.

Funerary and Memorial customs

When a Rego dies, the entire community gathers, and anyone who wishes speaks of the deceased individual's life and travails. Truth-telling is paramount, so for those who have lived badly the eulogies are not flattering. When all who wish to speak have done so, the body is ritually wrapped in linen, then it is carried into the catacombs or tombs that the community uses for this purpose and they are sealed inside a sarcophagus. Their name and deeds are chiseled on the front of the sarcophagus and it is sealed with wax and tar, then again with lead.
