Aasimar, Children of the Light

Orion could barely remember what it had been like, to be human, to be normal in the sight of those who could not understand things of the divine. Yet, he now understood and the shackles of ignorance were shaken to their very core because of this new knowledge. Only a year had passed since his awakening, a year when he left behind the life of a simple wheat farmer on a simple farm and had joined in a calling higher than simple fields and crop rotations.
Orion flexed his fingers, feeling the raw power surging just beneath his skin, and smiled in satisfaction as the celestial tattoos that traced the length of his arm lit up and spread like wildfire across his body in a wild array in swirling lines. He could feel the lumina coursing through him, empowering even the slightest action with energy and vigor. It felt good to be divine. He knew, however, that his power came with a divine mandate, a calling the likes of which he was meant to see fulfilled. At times, this solitary life left him wanting, needing interaction with someone other than the stiff-backed celestials, waging an endless war of righteousness. Oh, how his heart cried out to be among other Anointed, to feel . . . human, again.
Orion shook his head. No, he would not doubt, he could not doubt his faith and calling. But still, even among the trill of power he felt lonely.
Orion gritted his teeth and clenched his fist, pouring lumina into his body and guiding it onto his back where two brilliant wings of sapphire and pure white light exploded into existence. From his perch, high amongst The Atlas Peaks, he lept and flew into the sky. He was a streak of blue, like a falling comet, against the midnight sky and below, amongst the icy peaks, he could sense the breath of life hidden among that which everyone assumed to be cold and dead. In the distance, far below, The AirBorne wheeled about and The Fort City of Icarus continued on in its tireless defense of The Shatter Pass. Something seemed . . . off though.
Orion narrowed his eyes and flew in a little closer, watching as arrows began to rain down upon the city, slaughtering innocent soldiers and merchants in the streets alike. AirBorne wheeled down from the sky with battle shrieks and someone atop the wall rung the warning bell. Orion had to help. He must defend those who were dying.
Suddenly, like a fist of air, a voice slammed into his mind. "Orion, what do you think you are doing."
Orion groaned and watched the battle from above, wide-eyed. "I need to help them, Andromeda. I need to protect innocent lives."
Orion could almost hear Andromeda's exasperated sigh just as he could sense it in his head. "Orion, they are not yours to save. Remember, you have a mission. You cannot risk your life defending those who do not even believe in Pelor. Look at them, they are heathens, still believing that the Old Gods care one whit about them and that these Reborn gods are any better."
"That doesn't matter, Andromeda. They're people, my people, I should be doing something rather than watching. Think of the lives I could save."
"Orion, I forbid it. Don't make me involve Adun, or Kord again. You know how they responded the last time you acted like a wildcard."
  "Andromeda . . . please."
There was a long pause through which Orion held his breath, hoping. Maybe this time she'd see. Maybe this time they'd realize that he could help, guide these lost souls to a better path, to better gods.
Finally, Andromeda responded. "No, I'm afraid not, Orion. Continue on with your appointed task. Let the little blind people fight each other if that's what they wish. We must prepare for the greater threat."

Basic Information

Genetics and Reproduction

Aasimar are a very rare, very strange species. They are not born so much as they are chosen. Where this power comes from is unknown, however most Aasimar (often called Anointed) tend to keep to themselves and do good where they can. Aasimare are not limited to humans either, accounts detail a Qut who was once Anointed and an Ahin too along with several elves.

Civilization and Culture

History

Aasimar are recorded to have first begun appearing shortly following the Dawn War. These individuals, Anointed from amongst the general populace, were individuals who were believed to have a strong moral compass and other positive traits that people would often remark upon as "noble." Aasimar were divine messengers of the Gods, or so they claimed. When pressed for details about the gods that anointed them, many aasimar could not give specifics such as names or appearances, they'd simply state that they were chosen and that they knew this from the guide they received as a companion. To this day, the process of selection is not entirely known. However, it is clear that when a person is chosen to become an aasimar, they forsake their old name and lifestyle and take up a new name and mission.
