Blinking Bees Species in Koria | World Anvil

Blinking Bees

Overview

The species of the Blinkling Bee is a subspecies of the common bumblebee. They are a tad larger than the common bumblebee, but that only makes them more fluffy.

A lot of Buzzzzzzz

Blinking Bees are obnoxious loud compared to other bumblebees because of their size. They are nearly double the size of a normal bumblebee, which makes people uneasy. It is the eyes, nothing more.

They do live in a hive with an even larger queen and a lot of workers. The hive is obviously larger than the normal one and can also appear in various ways, depending on their surroundings.

Blinking Bees are only appearing in two regions: near the islands of An Delf and around the capital of the Copperkin dwarves Grodan. Rumour is that a swarm of bees got seperated with their queen and got hit by a glimpse of energy, being maybe magic. But nobody had found the actual reason behind it and well, it isn't that important.

There are mostly around 400 of worker bees in a hive, a few male drones and the queen. Which is getting a bit interesting, but there are more than enough swarms, so happy blinking!

Bling, Bling, Baby!

The Blinking Bee got their name from... blinking. She is it doing the same way as the firefly and with the same reason: to attract a mate. Lucky as they are, the females outnumber the males, so their slow and bright blinking is to get to mate first. Not that it makes a difference.

In opposite to the fireflies, the blinking of the Blinking Bees is so bright, that it can illuminate smaller clearings in the woods at night. For a few decades Blinking Bees were used as lamps, but because they are not many, people stopped. It is always a pleasure to see Blinking Bees do their mating ritual, even the dwarves enjoy it.

Hey Honey!

Blinking Bees are creating a lush, white and creamy honey just right out of production. In opposite to other bees they have an enzym in their digesting system which splits the ingredients up and creates that sweet, yummy bee barf honey. It is rather expensive and used only seldom.

Fluffy Tales

"God, you are fluffy. Hey, have a sip of sugar water... see, better?"
— friendly human helping a Blinking Bee out

"Randolf is so cute."
"You mean surrounded by bees?"
"Blinking Bees. He enjoys their company."
"And they enjoy his for some reason."
— Two female neighbours talking about their dog surrounded by buzzing bees

"One glass of Blinking Bee honey... what...? How many...? I wanted honey, not to by the entire hive!"
— Suprised Customer

"Oh and got ya, ma man. Some sweet tea with ya bread, got ya covered. See, I got maself this honey and damn, ma man, that is some nice stuff. Ever had Blinking Bee honey? Ya never need another one if ya have the coins for it."
— Dwarf to his guest

And if you are careful, you can pet them. Until they fly away of course. :)

These guys are so cute! What kind of flowers do they like? I need to attract them, so they will blink around my house, and I can still see to unlock my door when I come home late at night.

Glad you like them.^^ They prefer wild flowers like Cardinal Flower, Primroses, Bee Balm... normal roses work too. But in general you can use whatever flower you fancy, they aren't that picky. :)
