Baylan

Baylan City, most often referred to as Baylan, is the capital city for the Kingdom of Baylan and for the entirety of the Kingdom of Kore Wyn. It is ruled by Queen Ada Garnetleaf, who governs from the Imperial Palace on the Shodun River.

History

Baylan is the oldest continuously inhabited city in Kore Wyn. It began as a dwarven settlement dug in along the banks of the Shudon River. Over the course of a few decades, the dwarves mined out two sizable veins of gold and silver but soon gave up on further explorations due to the numerous underground lakes and subterranean rivers they discovered. In an act of friendship, the dwarves presented the settlement to the elves who dwelt in the forests to the east and west of the Shudon.   The gold and silver made their way down the Shudon River and established Kore Wyn City (KWC) as the financial powerhouse on the continent. KWC served as the capital of the Kingdom until 112, when it was overrun by demons and held for almost two decades, until 130. Given the demonic occupation, Baylan was declared as the temporary capital in 114, but the designation became permanent because of the protection of the dragons in the Drackondia Mountains

Today

With a population of just short of 3500 people, Baylan is a relatively small city for being the capital of all of Kore Wyn, but it has a very diverse population and an average household income that higher than anywhere else in the kingdom outside KWC. Elves are the majority of the population (30%), followed by Humans at 20%, Dwarves and Halflings each at 15%, and Wolfkin and Mallards at 10% each.   A large number of its citizens are involved in either politics or law, though there are a good number of merchants who do very well financially as middlemen shipping the natural resources downriver to the lucrative international KWC markets.   The Riverside section of the city is home to the Imperial Palace, several grand governmental buildings, luxurious homes, and upscale shopping options. It is heavily policed day and night. The neighborhoods known as The Hills--particularly Westhill and Northill--are notably less secure, especially after sundown. While serious violent crime is rare, petty thefts and robberies are increasingly common. Residents are vocal about Queen Ada's lack of assistance, but their complaints have not changed the situation.
