Witchfinder

You have worked for the College of Questions. You have lived your life by the Witchfinder's Treaty, and have enjoyed the privileges and responsibilities of it. You are used to feeling alone, even in a crowd, and have nurtured a healthy paranoia. Anyone could be a fiend, and anyone could be in league with fiends.   Skill Proficiencies: Arcana, Investigation   Tool Proficiencies: Torture Implements   Languages: Many Witchfinders speak Elvish, due to their founding texts.    Equipment: Travel Clothes (Witchfinder Style), 5 torches, tinderbox, backpack, bedroll, sm. Tent. Pouch containing 10 GP.   Feature: Witchfinder’s Trial: Legally, a Witchfinder can make accusations of malicious witchcraft against anyone.  This is from a treaty with Maecodia following the rise of the Mage Towers, in response to populist worries that organized mages may begin to exert undue power against nonmagical populations. These trials typically last two or three days during which the Witchfinder will attempt to sway a crowd against the accused. The accused is entitled to either speak in their own defense or find an advocate. The crowd makes the final decision on whether to convict or acquit the accused. Witchfinders have been known to abuse this privilege from time to time, kicking off witch hunts that engulf whole towns. These usually don’t end well for the Witchfinder.   Suffer a Witch: The Witchfinder benefits from successful trials, and will find trials easier the more often they win as their reputation precedes them and crowds are more amenable to their arguments if they know others have been in the past. Likewise, they can get a reputation for scurrilous accusations if they lose consecutively. Witchfinders with this background typically start out with some success finding certain malicious spellcasters. While you may have an easier time convincing people that you’ve found another of these, your chosen foe is just as aware of your reputation as the people are.   d8 Special 1 Failure - Your last few trials have been thwarted by agents from the Golden Tower, giving you a reputation for frivolous accusations! 2 Keebkiller – You have success finding elf spies.  3 Changeling Charger  - You have a reputation for sniffing out changeling identity thieves. 4 Hagbane – More than once the witch on the pyre turned out to be a polymorphed hag. 5 Green Menacer – You discovered a cluster of hidden greenskins and led people to purge their taint. 6 Salty Savior – A cult was sacrificing humans to their watery “god.” You contributed to their fall. 7 Devil’s Doom – A nalfashnee held a number of contracts. You found his stash. 8 Exterminatus – You uncovered a demon cult. 9 Hexhammer – You found hedge witches/wizards cursing innocent people with dark magic. 10 Tower’s Foe – You have managed the near impossible, to convict a Tower Mage.     d8 Personality Trait 1 I am aggressive about everything. I’m not sure how to turn it off. 2 I have a moral certitude that can only be enjoyed by they who have faced evil. 3 I have gazed too long into the abyss. I’m a monster, and I know it. 4 I am a bigot. I’ve noticed certain ‘patterns’ in those I uncover. 5 I am not averse to torture. It may actually be my go-to. 6 I am interested only in the discovery and rooting out of evil. 7 Secretly, I am absolutely terrified of magic and the supernatural. 8 I am vindictive and petty, not taking slights lightly.   d6 Ideal 1 Justice. I will root out and destroy evil. (Good) 2 Sadism. I enjoy the sweet screams of victory. (Evil) 3 Tradition. I will strictly follow the Witchfinder’s Treaty. (Lawful) 4 Maverick. I will root out and destroy the evil, rules be damned. (Chaotic) 5 Winning. I have to win, for the College. (Any) 6 Advancement. I will rise to rank in the College. (Lawful)   d6 Bond 1 I owe the College my life, and I take that debt seriously. 2 I come from a line of Witchhunters that dates back to the original College of Questions. 3 I was wronged by a witch or supernatural being, and I want revenge. 4 I carry a Death Curse with me. It may never be cured, but I must try. 5 I was given a prophetic vision of my own death from a burning cultist. 6 I had a vision from my god(ess), setting me on this path.   d6 Flaw 1 I hate magic, and despise magic users. 2 I would rather win than be right. 3 It’s the part of the Witchfinder’s Treaty that entitles me to the convicts’ property that I like best. 4 I have a weakness for a certain kind of offender (brown eyed girls, unwitting lycanthropes, etc.) 5 An assassin’s poison has left me weak to magical mental assaults. 6 I have a temper, and sometimes say or do things rashly.
