Transformation // Change

A gated power meant for the blue-blooded.

"So you are one of the rare natural-born transformation mages, my pupil? Fascinating, so you haven't gotten a marriage proposal from the Duvarian royalty yet.
They are known to be quite demanding when it comes to that particular form of magic.
But given you are not ... yet ... bound to the restrictions a member of the family has to endure, care to assist me tomorrow in my lecture about your powers?"

Prof. Mauze Tung

The ability to be what you want, who you want. A powerful ability which caused havoc in ancient times before the Duvarian Royal family decided to assume monopoly over this elusive power, capturing the entire population of Chromelions to let them live in the palace gardens of Illox. They watered down this heinous ability into a signpost of power and dedication to one's birthright. But what is the power of being a Chosen today, and what was it before?

Starsign // True transformation

"I am so envious of you, brother. You can transform into a gorgeous-looking and massive red dragon. And your body slowly assumes the beautiful red scales. And what do I have? Crux! I am now walking for one year on hooves! The fur of the minotaur is sprouting out of my limbs. It will take at least two decades of constant shifting to get past this weird partial shift."

Scira Oribates, Minotaur-born

The traditional use of transformation in the current times is the restrictive exclusive shift, either partially or fully, into the starsign beast the caster was born under. With the strict deviation of its former use the Duvarian royalty achieved two important goals. First, they made an entire school of magic as exclusive as possible to their name brand. Users of this magic can use the transformation as well as the permanent shifts to the body as a dead-sure sign of the blue blood coursing through their veins. They are only allowed to transform into a true representation of their mythical beast, no matter if the form they assume will appear feral or not. Higher-standing members of the family, especially the crown princes and princesses, are however allowed to choose a more practical version of their star sign, becoming a more powerful imagination of how they will look like when the base-form transformation has met its zenith.

Transformations are painful as they reconstruct the entire body into the desired form and prowess. Users, who transform into beings far bigger than their humanoid form will experience bone and flesh reconstruction. Shifting back from a bigger form usually leaves behind a glob of unidentifiable mass remains rendering the caster to become excessively hungry and thirsty as a result.
Shrinking one's form and then growing again causes one to first shed one such a glob, to get later regrown with the aid of Veil-energy replacing bones and flesh. Changing size often and in rapid succession can cause a temporary illness originating from the fact that they then consist only of non-original matter being forced to rest so that the core can accept the magic body.

Assumption // Chimera

"The power of a Chosen is quite known amongst all of you. But a transformation mage is capable of so much more. Meet your pupil, who is currently transformed into a carbon copy of none other than myself, your beloved Professor Tung. Identity theft was a big deal before the Duvarian royalty gated this power behind their palace doors. Same with mixed transformations. Notice how his left arm is the tentacle of a deep-sea beast? And his right one the vicious claws of a Drago? You won't see any royal member ever assuming multiple forms at once.

Abilities that allow the user to transform into a specific individual are usually looked down upon, given how dangerous it can be to have someone act in one's image. This school of transformation only gets used by non-royalists as a means of entertainment and education. Although there have been recent singular cases of perfect impersonation leading to the assumption that some crook got born with that ability causing havoc.

Chimerics is a term for the very few users of this magic who dare to mix species together. It is a difficult part of this ability as one has to take into account the physical strength of multiple beings finding balance to create a working mixed-breed. Especially combining cold-blooded and hot-blooded species can cause difficult results in one's body.

Body Alternations

Given the fact that the magic of transformation lives and dies of the ability to morph into different real and mystical animals the immediate symbiosis comes to no surprise with no physical alterations to the body. The only thing that changes on a molecular level is the readiness of the very cells to accept sudden change and a slight pain tolerance increment to easily brush off the pain of transformation.

Overuse

Favilla brushed along the scaled hands of her protegeé prince Crux. She traced the individual bloodred scales of his dragon form one by one, feeling the roughness of battle yet smoothness of royalty on each singular scale. But he wasn't in his dragon form, never was in the estate. Yet the many transformations into his star sign beast left permanent changes on his elven body.
A few more decades, and he will be king of Duvara and the transformation will be complete, scales covering each inch of his. She couldn't wait to see that date.

One obvious drawback of transformation magic is the readiness of the cells to assume the form of preference slowly but surely. A drawback that can be easily circumvented by switching it up, always shifting into a different beast. The Duvarian royalty however embraced that quirk of the magic. Every member of the family, a born Oribates or married into the family, has access to this magic. They are however only allowed to change into the form dictated by their date of birth, in the case of Duvara's current king the royal dove. With each year passed the body of the member will shift slightly until eventually, they become a humanoid version of their starsign animal even when not transformed.
