Life // Healing

Halo-wearing living saints.

"We are at war, Queen, King. My men at the front require every kind of support this country can fathom.
(...)
I don't 'abduct' clerics from the hospitals, please ... I draft them into where their abilities matter.
I much rather know a man, who can fight, to be healed by them than some weak-willed sick who never could protect Nemthi!"

Ivory Jack's decree (4902)

Clerics are in a weird state in the politics of the world. The ability to heal blemishes of astonishing severity has caused the unique status, that they are needed at any time, at any place. Freedom is a thing, which is usually a foreign word for any Cleric. Due to the sheer rarity of this symbiosis has the altruistic desire to become one long been tainted by the world to instead sign up for a life of getting treated like a useful tool. While Clerics in times of peace enjoy a high stand and a decent salary for their duties have they very bad chances of survival in times of war and hardships.

The still ongoing 100 years War has shown the true extent ruthless commanders will take to win a war. Both sides forcefully drafted Clerics from all over their country to use them as fuel to keep the cogs of war in perpetual motion, healing dominantly the important personalities while being forced to ignore the commoners getting crippled in that pointless battle.

How long has it been since I last used my abilities to heal anyone else other than my brother? Too long, yet I can't help myself stealthily supporting the poor people of the slums with a hidden hand on their back. But my disguise dissipates. The more I heal different people, the clearer my halo shines over my head. Some day even concentration will not be enough anymore to suppress the shine.
If that happens my life will be over. I will get sent to the frontlines, getting forced to heal discriminately and without any care for my own well-being. As a deserter will that damn Ivory Jack see no need in keeping me alive, squeezing out all life force left in my paws and then tossing me aside once I am useless, left behind on the battlefield to either die or face an even worse face getting found by the elves of Scorzosa. I heard horrible stories from all over the slums, from returning soldiers who never even met the touch of a Medic. Taunted by their superiors, with them getting healed as they denied the Medics to help the seriously injured. I will do my everything to keep this cursed power hidden, for my brother's sake, for our quest for a cure. We have to become essential before I can unveil my abilities.
That is the only way out.

Healing // Regeneration

Clerics are able to heal organic matter. Depending on how known the caster is about the anatomy and functions of the target will the effect be greater or worse. While the touch of a Cleric has always a positive effect, curing the main issue can knowledge far extend that initial desire of health. The touch of a revered arcanist trained in the art of observation and medical prowess can fix many things in conjunction to the primary goal. Be it rotten teeth, a crooked back or a failing liver. If the Cleric knows how to identify the issues can they heal them. But even the best healer can't heal illnesses without a known treatment.

Besides active healing, many clerics also adopted the form of passive healing, so-called regeneration. The fact that their magic is based on the gate of winter, means the school of water, can Clerics store small bubbles of their magic in their own or foreign bodies. With the bubble slowly getting absorbed, the healing effect boosts any natural healing by a clearly noticeable margin while numbing the worst of pain. Regeneration is an ability primarily used by Medics to grant their squad an edge when facing danger before they personally can interfere. Without the clear instruction given by the knowledge of the caster is the effect however quite basic and can't fix serious damage.

Physical alterations

Given the sheer utility of the symbiotic ability to heal oneself at the expense of one's stamina, it is barely a surprise that Clerics have no real mutations or adaptations to speak of. They are just their normal self with the touch of miracle at their fingertips.

This miracle touch comes however with a payoff, showing the intentions of the Cleric. Depending on how generous the healer is with their ability, healing many instead of many times the same person, they will sooner or later notice something above their head. A faint halo will sooner or later appear, allowing the Cleric to have an undistinguishable attribute which helps, which explains their powers without words, creating authority over treating the sick.
"Are you an angel?"

A twisted, turned and utterly broken Halo

Overdose usually leads to bad consequences, sometimes even death. Clerics are able to feel such an overdose effect as well when they push their ability to heal far beyond their limits. If they attempt to heal others without regard for their well-being, the halo is prone to crack and eventually even shatter. In such a case the magic will corrupt and so will the spirit having granted that ability to the mage.
The hand that performed miracles will wither away into a hand which can only cause pain and suffering.

They are broken, overdosed, and inevitably turned to the dark side. They are called witches by society, able to seal up wounds by nefarious means, turning open wounds into purple-glowing areas of perpetual pain. They retain the ability to rescue others from certain death, but the fact that each sealed wound will worsen the state of the patient permanently reduces the witch to a last resort option for the hopeless.
Given that most witches were forced to heal way past their limits their view of others will be crooked, their trust broken.
Greed will show and they will perform their hurting touch only against proper payment. They are evil. Not by choice, but thanks to their symbiotic partner having been corrupted by the overdose, spreading discord and bad thoughts through the brain and soul of the tormented.
