Krel

Fierce and unrelenting, the Krel clans are famed for their honorable nature and prowess in martial combat. While their society could charitably be described as “lively” and uncharitably described as “savage”, the Krel are valued for their physical strength and thus are frequently hired as manual labor, mercenaries, enforcers, and bodyguards. Their method of attaining the mental fortitude required to resist the Siren involves overpowering the magic through sheer emotion and strength of character, with mixed results. On one hand, many Krels can enjoy a more plentiful and hedonistic lifestyle compared to the other residents of the Singing Wastes due to their capability to essentially brute force their way past the machinations of the Unsidhe. On the other hand, their lives can also be harsh and short due to the nature of their society. It should be noted that in spite of their natural resistance towards the madness-inducing effects of the Wastes, the ranks of the Thralls of the Song are made up of a disproportionate amount of Krel clansman when compared to other ethnic groups.

Naming Traditions

Family names

Dependent on clan of origin, an individual's last name is always the same as the clan name.

Other names

Most Krel names follow Celtic naming conventions.

Culture

Average technological level

Most Krels don't bother with the invention or creation of new technologies. Thanks to their Cieran allies however, the Krel have reached a level of technology close to an early industrial level. Although they are known to have a distaste towards firearms, most believing them to be cowardly.

Funerary and Memorial customs

Krel funerals tend to be loud and raucous affairs, choosing to celebrate the life and deeds of the deceased before allowing them to join their ancestors and the Rona by burning their corpse within a beacon, or a pyre lit from a beacon.

Common Myths and Legends

Most Krel clans keep a major epic or a grand story which tells a heavily romanticized and often exaggerated account of their clan's famous warriors and craftsmen. Krel history is primarily oral and therefore shifts depending on the storyteller's preferences and clan. The epic of Duhan Wintersbane, for example, spans across all four of the major Krel clans, each of which having a differing account of the man and his relationship with his three companions who would go on to found the other three major clans.

Ideals

Gender Ideals

The Krels possess a highly egalitarian worldview, believing both genders to be equally capable of combat, working, and domestic duties.

Major organizations

Krels make up the bulk of the infantrymen and warriors of the Kingdom's military, while also owning and operating a great deal of the mercenary companies and labor unions.
Art - Like all other denizens of the Kingdoms, Krels hold the hearth as a particularly sacred place, decorating it with engravings of their family trees, and lengthy epic poems and stories of the deeds of their ancestors. While these tales are frequently exaggerated, several of them easily date back to before the Sunfade, making them a very valuable resource for historians. Krels also favor music, particularly lengthy songs detailing the exploits of notable heroes and fierce, fast paced melodies to accompany their feasts and tournaments. Finally, some Krel clans have earned renown as tattoo artists, choosing to mark their members with specific colors and patterns to denote their clan of origin.   Physical Appearance - Krels do not have the same amount of physical variance as the Cieran, tending towards red or blonde hair and green or blue eyes. They do share the Cieran tendency towards fair skin. Both males and females will range from 5’11” to 6’10” on average and are almost always heavily built and muscular, although it is hard to tell if this is a physiological occurrence intrinsic to the ethnicity or if it is merely a byproduct of their culture.
