VoER C4 Class 0-6-0

The Vale of Eyre Railway C4 class was a series of fourty seven 0-6-0 tender locomotives designed by () and built by Nasmyth Wilson & Co. between 1896 & 1902.
The first batch of the class was ordered in August 1896 but the arrival of them was delayed until 1897 after several ports in Southern Etorea froze over leading to the VoER loaning some 301 Class 2-4-0s from the Great Northern & Southern Railway. The C4s gradually replaced the C1s and C2s which dated back from around 1866, though some were transfered onto secondary duties. They were often seen pulling the heavier goods trains and postal trains, the latter was one of the duties that required the fitting of air brakes.   After the first batch, eight more batches were ordered between 1897 and 1901 with the last six arriving in March 1902.     WW1 & Locomotive Sales:
In 1915, the VoER loaned thirteen locomotives to the Railway Operating Division for use on the western front, all but two returned. The two that didnt were destroyed during The Battle of Kersestein in Early 1918. The locomotives that returned were offered back to the VoER and then the ENR but were turned down the first time with the ENR taking three for spare parts. Two of the locomotives that returned were sold to D. A. Frye of Lowton in 1924 along with five other locomotives, one of the two (VoER №173, ROD №1173) eventually left the yard in 1927 to become Valentine Coal Co. №19, it is known that she was used as the locomotive of armoured train №7 "Ol'Faithful". №19 was preserved in 1962 and is currently under restoration at ().   Three more locomotives were sold by the ENR, two of which (enr nos) were sold to (idea needed) and the other (enr no) was used as a shunter by Pat. C. Godfrey LTD, Shipbreakers until she was scrapped in 1948 after being involved in an accident where her boiler was outright destroyed. One of the locomotives owned by the ROD was presented to the Claybourne Military Railway where she was presented with the name "Lt. Col. Mathew D. Shaw", she ran on the railway until she was scrapped in 1955.
