GN&SR 301 Class

The Great Northern & Southern Railway 301 class was a series of 18 2-4-0 tender engines built for mixed traffic use between 1878 and 1881.   The design was largely based on the Sharp Stewart 2-4-0 design that had been used by the GN&SR from 1871, but was improved upon by then Chief Mechanical Engineer (). The improvements included enclosed half - cabs (rather than weatherboards), the fitting of tender weatherboards, sanding on both sets of driving wheels and dual brake equipment (vacuum and westinghouse). The 301 class were mostly used on local passenger, parcels and express goods trains but would occasionally be used on other duties if needed.   In 1916, three locomotives (№s 306, 318 & 319) became duplicate list №s A83 - A85 and remained in departmental stock until 1927 when the last (№318) was scrapped. When the railways of Etorea were nationalised, №s A84 & A85 were given the new numbers 38 & 39 whereas №A83 became C&W (), she worked as the works shunter for the () Carriage & Wagon Works.   Loan to the Vale of Eyre Railway:
