Ukraine

The Tsardom Ukraine was a country in Eastern Europe that borders Austria-Hungary and Romania to the west, Russia to the north and east, and the Black Sea to the south. It is ruled by the Alexandrovich branch of the Romanov Family.

Culture

The Ukrainian culture was very similar to that of Russia, though much more repressive. Freedom of the Press was greatly restricted.

History

Ukraine gained independence in 1883 following the Ukrainian War. Alexander Alexandrovich, having been sent into exile with his father, looked upon the reforms of his uncle, Constantine I, as russophobic and illegitimate. In 1882, he pressed his claim to the throne of Russia after the death of his father. He managed to gain the support of Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria-Hungary, and forced a stalemate in the war. After the war's end, Alexander was proclaimed Tsar of an independent Ukraine.   Nicholas I, son of Alexander, supported Austria-Hungary following the assassination attempt of Archduke Leopold in Sarajevo. Nicholas offered to lead the investigation of the attempt. Ukrainian officials determined that while Serbian military leaders supported the assassination attempt, it absolved the Serbian government of any wrongdoing.   Later, Nicholas supported Austria-Hungary again when Bulgaria attempted to attack Serbia. This eventually led to the Great War. Ukraine was on the losing side of the war, and Nicholas was forced to abdicate due to public opinion. He was succeeded by his brother, Michael, who entered into negotiations with Russia and Germany.

Disbandment

During the negotiations, Michael spoke with Ivan VII of Russia, and expressed no desire to rule. Ukraine was subsequently annexed by Russia and reintegrated into the Russian Empire. However, after a brief stint of indpendence, the people of Ukraine grew discontent with being back under Russian rule.
