Monarch Luda Bonworth (a.k.a. The Exiled, The Cursed)
Under Zhoya Bonworth's rule, her House was taken over by distant relatives. These so-called “True Bonworth” had the prestige coming from royal blood and old conquests, but little to show for it; their bid for relevancy forced the Queen to pick heir and regent from their ranks.
Known as a subdued raven-breeder, Regent Luda ambitioned to restore their line's martial heritage, starting with having soldiers take over The Council -commoners were expected to fall in line, as was their nature. Courtesy didn't hide their casual cruelty; the Counts rallied behind their own, but the advisors hindered their use of laws and the Grandees reeled on the edge of rebellion.
Luda married into the richest family in the Kingdom -the Corruption Family-, greedy for their power. This didn't bear out, as fortunes were swallowed by their thriftless cousin Fitzalbert; the wedding did distract from a second crab bubble crash.
The Greater Arrow Tree's ominous withering at the turn of the millennium shocked the Grandees into fighting anew the Eastern values seeping South. After the Stone Maiden rampaged, they finally launched a “holy war”, falling upon the feeble defenders of contested lands, bloodying the soil for eons.
But while all eyes were on the genteel Grandees, the lowest Patricians had been making their moves. To save the Treasury from Fitzalbert, the Treasurer had taken a loan: the masked nobles collected the very roads, and took tolls on people of both sides, under threat of putting the Royal Bombard to use. Before the Counts knew what to do, their Kingdom had been strangled to ruination. Patricians partied while peasants lacked the coins for bread, and the Monarch themselves were evicted, made one of the farmers they despised while a vulgar foreign pirate took their crown.
Luda 'the Exile' would eventually find peace, at the side of a wife who had renounced the wealth of her House out of loyalty; but their own bloodline had truly fallen.
