Alda's Sigil Item in Kima | World Anvil

Alda's Sigil

Not much is known about Kima pre-Collapse, nor the inhabitants that once roamed the continent that modern Kimans call the Ačka, or the Ancients. What is known, however, is their absolute mastery over magic and magical artifacts. In fact, historians know the most about their inventions because that's what most of the Ancients' writings were about. The main problem, however, was that most were destroyed during the Collapse. The only known surviving relics are hidden deep in the Kačkan Abyss, a dangerous fissure in the ground blocked by a dragon skeleton and crawling with šluak. Perhaps the most famous of these relics is this one, invented by someone named Alda. The writings say that it can bolster a mage's abilities tenfold, and that it can bless the non-gifted with control over mojy, magic. It enraptured many, from paupers to kings. High Commander Elric himself became obsessed with finding it, ultimately leading to his downfall and Kima's descent into civil war. In a tragic twist of fate, a pair of soldiers from the ongoing rebellion discovered the Sigil after completing the first successful expedition into the Kačkan Abyss. They brought it back to their base, arriving just in time to watch Elric's execution at the hands of the future Empress Ragna.   The Sigil binds to its bearer, literally searing itself into their skin of their wrist. It's disc-shaped, flat, and appears to be made of dragonglass. It's covered in a spiraling pattern with Ačkan words inscribed along the line work. While it's impossible to make out exactly what it says, a few words can be translated: mojy (magic), kačkan (primal magic), leučka (dragon), and vyšnak (blood magic).   When Erin and Rolan found the Sigil, it bound itself to Erin, who had no ability to use mojy prior to its discovery. Upon becoming bound, however, she found herself able to tap into magic that she'd never been privy to before. It is important to note, however, that she still required training to learn how to do so properly.   The Sigil is so irresistible not only for its gift of magical abilities, but because it's rumored to be able to perform powerful acts that no normal mage could ever hope to achieve in their lifetime. Legends say that the Sigil can bring a deceased loved one back to life, that it can bend entire continents to the bearer's will, reform the land itself, and even manipulate space and time. Of course, no one knows if this is true or not, because Erin is the only one to have ever born the Sigil.   There are caveats to the Sigil. It cannot be taken from a living bearer. It may only be given, or taken from a corpse. This is the only reason it is still in Erin's possession, following her cursed coma. There is another condition that it causes, largely unknown to any but the most dedicated scholars on the subject. The Sigil uses a bastardized form of primal magic, largely without the bearer's knowledge. Upon drawing mojy from the land, it then replenishes that mojy with the bearer's own life force––the process of taking someone's personal mojy is called vyšnak, blood magic, and eventually causes Blight. The Sigil will eventually kill its bearer if they continue to use it. This is by design, though it is likely that only the dragons, the sole remaining practicers of primal magic, know why.
