WEN BECHARD

Wen (Wendy) Bechard was one of the first members of the Ascendant Group Party. She hated the constraints that the Founders Sect put on the colonists. They wanted to send scouts and probes to ensure that there were no issues or threats, but Wen Bechard decided to strike out for the region that would be later known as Eldritch.
She persuaded a large group of colonists that their setting out was approved by the Mothership Council. The colonists set out and were on their way to Eldritch when they ran into a large migration of Red Kraiks. The colonists began rushing to Eldritch. When the river was in sight, they picked a place to camp. What happened next was a tragedy that continues to be cited from Kiannon’s history as what comes to those that don’t heed the wisdom of the Council of the Mothership.
The Bechard party camped and focused on preparing for the night when a cloud of Red Kraik began swarming. What happened next is known as the Kraik Settler Massacre. A pod of Kraiks dive bombed the settlers camp and carried off or gravely injured at least 8 settlers from a party of 30. Once the Kraiks had been driven off, the party set up barriers that were brought along against Wen’s advice.
It was also during the Eldritch settlement that the Esle Plague was picked up by more than half the remaining settlers. That plague ultimately resulted in the deaths of thousands of colonists, both in Eldritch and Cathay before a cure was found by the Mothership.
Wen’s leadership in getting the settlement through the summer and winter of that first year was venerated by the AGP, but her role in encouraging the unsanctioned expedition and the subsequent plague was despised by the Founders Sect and the Council of the Mothership who charged her for not just endangering of the lives of the Settlers, but of the entire colony. She is considered a dangerous fool.
