Niarchos is one of the most famous, or infamous to anyone who's involved in the slave trade, men in all of Hellenis. His exploits against the traffic and sale of sapient mortals are legendary the world over. The generally accepted narrative, which Niarchos himself never corrects, is that he was once a slave himself and that his first slave rebellion was against his own master. The truth would be somewhat less appealing to the public, and so Niarchos allows the lie to propagate, though it pains him to lie even by omission. His adventures do begin with a slave rebellion, but Niarchos was not on what he would now consider the right side.  Niarchos the Chain Breaker was born Niarchos of Caleselis, a man who spent his boyhood as a very wealthy and not particularly kind slave owner and his early adulthood as a successful slave trader. He nearly died during the slave rebellions of 155 Knight, and spent months afterwards bedridden and covered in bandages. His face had not been spared, and with cuts near his eyes he spent the entire time effectively blind. Perhaps that was part of the reason he did not recognize his rescuer, though the casual cruelty of his life up to that point means he may not have anyway. She was a slave, and one of his own. Long before he learned that, Niarchos had fallen in love. It may have been that realization which caused the scales to fall from his eyes and gave him his new purpose in life. More likely it was the day they crucified her in a public square. She hadn't even been part of the riots, apart from dragging Niarchos inside and bandaging him up. She was simply a slave in the wrong place, and what value could there possibly be in a thing such as that? Niarchos now had an answer. He left the city that very night, taking with him his entire wealth liquidated into slaves who wore the first chains he would break. They would not be the last.
