Molvanite Demon

"Picture an enormous hellscape of molten lava, jagged rock, and chocking gas. Then that hellscape stands up and charges towards you almost as fast as a horse. It turns into an absolute storm of wicked claws, giant horns, and gnashing teeth. The storm impacts with the sort of brutal strength that uproots trees and topples buildings, but it's not wild, it's controlled: every strike calculated and not a single movement wasted. That is what it's like to face a Molvanite Demon. In the Burning Woods there were over sixty of them. A full thousand took the field at Red Fjord. If I ever hear about you disrespecting veterans of the Demon War again, I swear by Orion you'll wish it was one of those that caught you. Now put some money in the man's bowl and go shine my armor until you can see yourself in it."
— Sir Galeran the Titan

Basic Information

Anatomy

Molvanite Demons share a general body shape with gorillas, though most are much more heavily built. There is great variation among individuals in the shape and size of their horns, claws, and dentition; the only common thread appears to be that they are extraordinarily deadly. Though the majority of their bodies are invariably covered by a thick hide of Abyssal stone, some Molvanite Demons do have a leathery skin, especially around the face, palms of the hand, and soles of the feet. Their internal structure bears the most resemblance to insects, the hydraulic action of the super-heated lava inside them is responsible for their motion. No matter how much of this lava leaks out between its stone plates, or how much fume is vented, a Molvanite Demon has never been observed to run out or cool down.

Genetics and Reproduction

Whatever horrifying process spawned the first Molvanite Demons is a secret known only to their creator . The Abyss refuses to lose a horror already birthed, however, and so new Molvanite Demons spew forth every time another plane of existence is punctured, and slowly but eternally grow from the ground in Ragnarok. Strangely for demons which are not lords of a layer or princes of a concept, Molvanite Demons whose mutations don't destroy all concept of gender are capable of sexual reproduction with other Abyssal creatures. When two members of the species mate, internal gestation is a matter of weeks and the result is almost always a clutch of three to eight Molvanite Demon eggs. These eggs always hatch one year and one day after they were laid.

Growth Rate & Stages

Molvanite Demons never really stop growing, but for those considered "adult" it is a process of inches over eons. Like any demons spawned by the Abyss itself, newborns are already fully grown. Individuals created through sexual reproduction are born fully developed and coordinated, but approximately one tenth the size of an "adult." Their growth varies wildly based on how much flesh and how many souls they consume, with a starved demon plateauing at roughly the same size as a dwarf, while a gluttonous one can reach full adulthood in a matter of hours.

Ecology and Habitats

Like all demons, Molvanite Demons are most at home on their own layer of the abyss, and corrupt any other surroundings to become more like their home. Ragnarok is a blasted wasteland of black rock and intense volcanic activity. As such, Molvanite Demons could easily blend in with their surroundings if they bothered with such tactics. These demons almost always choose Fight over Flight, and the knowledge that being destroyed on Ragnarok is permanent causes it to be quite the fight.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Molvanite Demons primarily consume souls, like their Abyssal brethren, but also number among the species that can derive lesser nourishment from eating flesh.

Biological Cycle

Other than increasing in size and perception abilities, the only changes a Molvanite Demon goes through are variations in its horns and teeth.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Molvanite Demons occupy an interesting position in the demonic "hierarchy" in that they are supremely powerful but not very intelligent. In packs of more feral demons they are almost invariably the alpha, but more intelligent groups often use them as dumb labor.

Facial characteristics

Molvanite Demons have extreme variation in their faces, but usually exist somewhere toward the beastly side of the humanoid spectrum.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Like all demons, until they are hunted down, Molvanite Demons can be found on every plane the Abyss has touched since their creation. The additional planes they reach through summonings is greatly reduced by the power and mindset necessary to summon one. Due to Molvan the Breaker's obsession with his kin, nearly all of them that can be found in the Abyss inhabit his own layer unless they're carrying out his bidding elsewhere.

Average Intelligence

With few exceptions, Molvanite Demons live up to their brutish appearance. Their intelligence is often considered on par with an average dog, though it should be noted that there appears to be an inborn exception for learning how to fight and kill.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

All Molvanite Demon subjects ever recovered have shown senses on par with the most sensitive of natural animals and there is ample evidence to suggest that these senses continue to improve the older the demon gets. Extremely old specimens even seem to acquire supernatural senses such as Ethereal Vision or Truesight.
Genetic Ancestor(s)
Scientific Name
Daemonium Molvaniti
Lifespan
As long as it has souls to burn, and even running out results in hibernation rather than true death
Average Height
8-12 meters
Average Weight
500-1600
Average Physique
Molvanite Demons appear incredibly muscular and though their actual motion is not achieved through muscles, no one ever made a mistake assuming one to be strong.
Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
The rock encasing nearly all Molvanite Demons is always jagged and black but the exact forms it takes, patterns of lava showing through, and coloration of any skin can vary wildly.
