Great Temple of Coloss

Purpose / Function

The Great Temple of Coloss in Oros serves as the beating heart of his worship in Khthon. When the temple was completed it put an end to nearly four hundred years the faith had spent without a headquarters since the sacking of Tafur. Though Coloss' status as the father of giantkind is certainly respected there, and far more giants are seen in Oros than any other human city, worship in the Republic of Oros tends to focus much more intently on his status as the creator and patron god of law and order. Services always become even better attended than usual when important votes draw near and during election season. Though the various buildings of the administrative campus in the Sunward District are the brain of Orosian law and rulership, it would not be inaccurate to say that the Great Temple of Coloss is its heart. Also of great importance to the people of Oros is that the temple serves as the location for the trials, a prison for the convicted, and an execution ground for the most heinous of the criminals and blasphemers apprehended by Coloss' paladins. Any other organization operating a parallel system of criminal justice within the territory of a sovereign nation would invariably lead to conflict, but the ubiquitous Colossite respect for the law means that the paladins and the city watch have never once disagreed in the over six millennia they have shared the city.

Alterations

Though minor repairs occasionally need to be made due to the depredations of the weather, the core of Coloss' worship on Khthon has not undergone any change in design or consequential addition since it was first constructed.

Architecture

The immediate impression of anyone who sees the Great Temple of Coloss for the first time is never anything other than "gargantuan." In honor of the Father of Giants, and to permit his children to come there to worship, the temple was constructed to a scale that makes a human standing nearby look simply comical. The building is more than large enough to be seen from anywhere within the city, and looms over its walls even from a significant distance outside them. The greatest of stone giant craftsmen carved the temple from a single piece of marble in the sun elf style, in honor of those who gifted them the opportunity.
