Personal history

Antigone is only the most recently given name for the entity that lives in the outskirts of Libria. Not even she remembers them all, having collected thousands over her long life and extensive travels. It's entirely possible that the First Witch is the oldest living mortal with a continuous thread of consciousness. Certainly the eldest dragons are older, but they hibernate for centuries or even millennia at a time. None of the giants of generations preceding her awakening are known to still live with the exception of the king of the Fomorians, and even his sentience is up for debate, let alone whether or not he maintains identity and recollection. The first of the elves have all died or passed willingly beyond the mortal world, and the last of the original dwarves was destroyed when their empire collapsed. Even the primordial spirits who awakened before her have died, departed the mortal world, or changed into another form and identity. Since the very moment the first human ark landed on Khthon's shores, and they gained their first conception of land and nature, the being now called Antigone has embodied that conception.   The Lady of the Woods has always been fascinated by the humans that inadvertently birthed her, the arcane magic that was revealed to her on that day, and the wounds in Khthon caused by the Abyssal interference that began not long afterwards. It was inevitable that she would come to make her home near Libria, and she features prominently in the legends and superstitions of that city going back to its founding. For the overwhelming majority of that time, only the highest levels of Librian authority, and the few young men she would abduct each year, knew that she actually existed. Her relationship with the people of the city, if you could even call it that was quite cool. In exchange for extravagant gifts she would provide occasional magical assistance or esoteric lore to the great and powerful who sought her out, and she would steal away as consorts young men who strayed too far into the wilds and caught her eye. In recent years there has been a push on the part of the city's leaders to enter into a more formal and long term arrangement with her, but there was only limited success. Like nearly everything else in the city, this changed when Archelaos arrived.   One of the primary feathers in his cap that Archelaos used to win initial influence was a positive, even seemingly quite close relationship with the resident primordial. The very day he arrived, progress on establishing relations between the city and the spirit advanced by leaps and bounds. When he rose to leadership of the city state and began changing its system of government, it was Antigone who anointed him and placed the crown upon his head. Today, she serves on one of the lesser seats of the Mage Council, mostly due to her extreme unfamiliarity with authority, both wielding and recognizing it. It is generally accepted that in a few decades or centuries, she will have subsumed many other positions, and take an upper seat.
