"I was born in the Rust Belt down by the gulf. You know the place where you have to wear a mask when you step outside because the air is so polluted? Yeah, that's the one. At least here I can step outside to smoke without worrying about the air combusting. I hated that place, but Ma didn't have much money and my father was killed before I was even born, so we didn't have much of a choice."
"Wasnt much work there really. Nothing at all, really. I dunno if y'all've been down that way but it's all scrap and bandits. No real communities until you get further into the city, and for ma and I that wasn't really an option, we couldn't really protect ourselves, hell, I tried, and we didn't have the coin to hire one of the roaming bands of mercenaries. So we settled for scraping. It wasn't great money, but it kept us alive, if you can really call it that."
"For as long as I can remember, Ma has been sick. Huntington's, I think? Something that made her real weak and... not all there. Sometimes she would forget to pick me up from school or feed me... but I don't blame her. Wasn't her fault."

They never told us that farming was really the only opportunity in the city. At this point in my life, Ma was getting pretty ill, she could barely carry her bag onto the train. No way in hell she was gonna be tilling soil and wrangling sheep."
"So we started lookin' at other options. Ma was able to find work at Lux's, bussin' tables and such, like I do now.
"The city had us held up in this tiny little room, maybe the size of a large bathroom, which was the same size as my room back home, but the difference was I was sharin' this one with like ten other people. There was never enough beds; Ma and I ended up sleeping on the floor most nights. But it was free, so we never complained. Eventually, Mister Lux found out about our living situation and let us move into his bar with the other workers."
"After about a year in, Ma's sickness got the best of her and I had to take over her job. She stopped eating, refused to get out of bed... I had to sit there and make sure she ate. Eventually her body just... gave up. I came to her bed with lunch and she wouldn't talk to me... So now I'm here. Don't plan on leaving anytime soon. Not like I can afford it anyways, ha."

Smoking. Jesse started smoking when he was around fifteen years old after getting into his mother's cigarettes and hasn't tried to quit. He tries to not be rude about it; he only smokes when nobody is around and acknowledges the fact that it is bad for him.
Drinking. Jesse is a semi-functioning alcoholic; he begins the day with a shot of whiskey and ends most days drunk. Luckily, he's a quiet, happy drunk and doesn't bother the people around him.
