Tiefling

Basic Information

Anatomy

Tieflings are humanoids of medium size. They can be clearly distinguished from other humanoids by the presence of the infernal-looking horns on their head, which range in size from small protrusions to huge and twisting sets of ram-like horns, and by the existence of their tails, which can be either prehensile or non-prehensile and may or may not feature a barbed point.

Growth Rate & Stages

Tieflings mature at the same rate as humans, generally attributed to the original tiefling's descent from humans. Tieflings are born with their tails and the beginnings of their horns (oftentimes only small nubs), though a tiefling generally will not grow into their horns (or fully develop their horns) until they have completed their adolescence in their late teens or early twenties. On average, tiefling lifespans are similar in duration to those of humans, though tend to be slightly longer, as instances of especially long-lived tieflings reaching the age of 100 are not quite as uncommon as amongst humans. Still, despite their infernal heritage, tieflings are cursed with similar mortality to humans, never reaching more than a decade beyond their first century. Moreover, tieflings still experience the typical effects of age which humans suffer from as the age.

Ecology and Habitats

Tieflings, much like their human counterparts, can be found all over the world in a variety of ecologies and habitats. Tieflings tend to act similarly to humans in how they modify an environment, building permanent dwellings, engaging in subsistence agriculture, and generally doing all the activities associated with complex societies.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Tieflings share similar dietary need and habits to humans and the other goodfolk. Tieflings tend to not have a specific culinary culture of their own, adopting the general local traditions in the societies in which they live.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Tieflings tend to lack any common social structure, a product of their relative isolation within the communities they live within. Some tieflings may stick close together in small family bands or communal units featuring individuals of shared lineages, even if the individuals are not directly related. Other tieflings tend to completely forego established social structures and bonds, finding more freedom in existing beyond conventional structures and norms.

Facial characteristics

The most apparent facial characteristics of tieflings are their horns, though the appearance of their horns varies wildly amongst not only the various broad tiefling lineages, but even amongst individuals within the same lineage. Some tieflings may feature small, unobtrusive horns which they might even be capable of concealing with a simple headband, hairstyle, or head covering, while other tieflings possess immense and obvious horns, and others have sets of horns which fall somewhere in between. Tiefling horns may be straight like a goat's, curl like a ram's, or spiral like a narwhal tusk. They generally come in pairs, and most frequently occur only as a single pair, but some tieflings have been known to possess two or even three sets of horns, or a single large set of horns and several smaller horn growths around their head.   Tieflings eyes also are generally clearly distinct from the eyes of humans or other humanoids, as not only does tiefling eye coloration feature the full spectrum of colors, but tiefling eyes are also generally pupil-less, giving them an otherworldly or alien appearance.

Average Intelligence

Although tiefling's are often stereotyped as conniving tricksters or mastermind schemers, in truth tieflings possess no greater mental faculties than any other

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Tieflings have superior vision in dim light and darkness when compared to those of humans, seemingly inheriting some of the natural comfort in darkness of their infernal ancestors, and many tieflings have eyes that seem to lack pupil's entirely.    Moreover, Tieflings also possess some natural resistance to heat and fire. This results from the tieflings ability to tolerate far greater temperatures comfortably than their human counterparts. Tieflings' skin burns far less easily and only at significantly higher temperatures than human skin, and while humans might expect to be severely burned if they were to reach barehanded into an open cooking fire to retrieve a cast iron dish before it burns, to a tiefling such a situation might create only a minor discomfort or passing inconvenience.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Tiefling names are diverse and inconsistent. In general, Tiefling names fall into three broad categories. Among the first, Tiefling names are reflective of the culture they group up within. The second group  Finally, the third group tends features names passed down through generations, reflective of their fiendish heritage, often derived from the Infernal language.   Most tieflings forego the use of their surnames, in an effort to further distance themselves from their fiendish heritage, as many of the Surnames of the original tieflings now live in infamy or make explicit reference to their infernal progenitors.    There are however some tieflings, most frequently those in the third group, who take great pride in their infernal descent. These tieflings, rather than concealing or discarding their surnames, instead place great emphasis upon them and delight in tracing their ancestry to various members of the fiendish hierarchy. Such views are especially prevalent amongst the various elements of the Tiefling underworld, where an individuals' specific fiendish ancestry determine their status and position, as tieflings with ties to devils ranked higher in the infernal hierarchy are elevated above their counterparts claiming descent from friends of lesser stature. Regardless, for most Tieflings a surname is a closely guarded secret, generally shared only when a Tiefling is certain it would provide ambiguous advantage (such as to assert rank, and), if ever.    Male Infernal Names: Akmenos, Amnon, Barakas, Damakos, Ekemon, Iados, Kairon, Leucis, Moloch, Morthos, Ordai, Pelaios, Skamos, Therai   Female Infernal Names: Akta, Anakis, Bryzeis, Criella, Damoia, Ea, Kallizta, Lerizza, Makaria, Nemeia, Orianna, Phelaia, Rieta, Urza    Virtue Mononyms: Art, Carrior, Chant, Creed, Despair, Excellence, Fear, Glory, Hope, Ideal, Music, Nowhere, Open, Poetry, Quest, Random, Reverence, Sorrow, Temerity, Torment, Weary

Major Organizations

As a a result of the widespread mistrust, fear, and outright discrimination against tieflings, many tieflings find it difficult to rise to high rank in many of the more prominent or reputable organizations in their communities. Moreover, Tieflings are almost always a small minority of these communities, and possess no extant homeland of their own, and thus are rarely well-represented in those few major organizations they do participate within, and lack the strong geopolitical representation of the other major races.    Perhaps the most prominent organization associated with tieflings is the shadowy Triarchy, sometimes referred to as "the secret empire." Myths about the Triarchy are widespread in popular imagination and paranoia, but no tiefling has ever revealed any conclusive information about it or even confirmed its existence, nor has any conclusive evidence ever been discovered. In general, these rumors allege the existence of a clandestine, world-spanning organization of which all tieflings are a part, or which only tieflings can be members of. Its origins are often mysterious or hazy, with the most salacious identifying it as the underground remnants of the empire forged by the first tieflings now obliterated and purged from history, working in secret to restore their dark empire or finally fulfill whatever ancient pact they made their infernal partners, while others identify it as a worldwide criminal network or cartel, and others describe it as an aid organization or underground national movement, while many deny its existence outright. Regardless of their veracity, paranoia about malicious tiefling conspiracies and unsubstantiated accusations  centered on the Triarchy have fueled a number of the worst acts violence and discrimination against tieflings.   Outside of public imagination, Tieflings are often confined to organizations and those jobs and positions deemed beneath respectable folk or "unclean," and as a result of this treatment, many more tieflings gravitate towards organizations beyond the normal bounds of society.

Gender Ideals

Tieflings have no established gender ideals or norms, but rather are generally simply unified in their identity as tieflings rather than focusing on petty distinctions of gender or sex, especially given that only a handful of tieflings may exist in a given community.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

Most Tieflings grow up speaking the common tongue, though they also seem to possess an innate ability to read, understand, and even speak infernal.

History

The first tieflings were humans who forged dark pacts with devils, the taint of these deals staining their bloodlines forever. These humans developed horns, unnatural eyes and skin tones, and devilish tails, and this infernal legacy still lingers in their descendants today. Although very few modern tieflings have any actual contact with infernal beings, and may be generations removed from their ancestors who made such bargains, tieflings still suffer widespread fear, suspicion, and discrimination in their dealings with others as a result of widespread perceptions that their bloodlines are forever sullied by their infernal associations, and that each individual tiefling must share the evil inclinations of their distant ancestors.
