Pyrite Dragon

The Pyrite dragon, contrary to its name, is not actually a dragon. Colloquially known as fools dragon, the pyrite dragon is known for its mischievous nature. Posing as a species of dragon to those who aren't knowledgeable in dragons and their species, the pyrite dragon has fooled many a person who has tried to proclaim they have a pet dragon. Illegal to own in Mournstead and Vaport, pyrite dragons are a coveted creature due to their shiny pale silver-golden scales that are shed monthly and thought to have incredibly magical properties. Despite how often they shed their scales, Pyrite dragons are often killed for them instead.
When in the wild, Pyrite dragons will play pranks on unsuspecting travellers, usually luring them into little holes they've dug, clearly intending on making them fall and be trapped, however, due to their size they tend to only end up spraining travellers' ankles in this way. Another favoured prank of theirs is to steal the food of people camping in their territories.
The eggs that Pyrite dragons lay are minuscule and resemble the eggs of a pseudodragon. They usually hide their eggs in the nest of pseudodragons, allowing their young to successfully live to hatching, at which point they will then consume any remaining pseudodragon eggs.
Usually found in the forests between Vaport and Mournstead, you'll know a pyrite dragon is near if you hear quiet squeaky screeches or the rustling of leaves, be careful of the small pranks and traps they pull on you.

Interesting that it shares habitat and competes with the fairy dragon. I keep wondering why they are illegal in some places.

Thank you! To save you from further wondering, they're illegal as a precaution to avoid people owning and farming them for their high-value scales, or ripping them out of their natural habitats! They can be owned via a permit, however, the hoops you have to jump through means only those who want to truly care and learn about them even bother applying.
